The issue of informal settlements has flared up again in Barcelona’s municipal debate, as new settlements continue to appear in various districts of the city. Partido Popular representative in the city council, Daniel Sirera, is urging Mayor Jaume Collboni to take urgent action. This call follows his recent visit to the La Sagrera neighborhood, where he personally witnessed the scale of the problem.
According to Sirera, previously small groups of unauthorized structures are gradually turning into larger, more organized settlements. These now shelter a growing number of vulnerable people. He noted that one of these camps could currently be the largest in Barcelona.
Increase in Illegal Structures and Social Risks
According to Partido Popular estimates, there are around 70 such sites in the city, housing over 270 people, including minors, in difficult conditions. Nearly ten of these locations have been identified in the Sant Andreu district. Sirera emphasizes that the situation affects not only the residents of the camps themselves, but also those living in nearby neighborhoods.
Among the consequences, he highlights increased anxiety among locals, a rise in theft, domestic disputes, accumulation of garbage, and the threat of fires. In the politician’s view, all of this requires immediate intervention by municipal authorities.
Demands to the City Council and Possible Solutions
Sirera insists that the Barcelona administration dismantle informal settlements and offer alternative housing options to their residents. He emphasizes the need to involve social services, especially when children are living in such conditions.
He believes the city needs clear and swift action to ensure order and safety for all residents. In his view, government inaction only makes the situation worse and creates additional risks for the city.
Public reaction and next steps
The issue of unauthorized settlements in Barcelona remains one of the most pressing topics on the agenda. Citizens and representatives of various political parties continue to discuss possible solutions. New proposals and initiatives aimed at addressing the problem are expected in the near future.
