BBVA Launches Wipöp: A New Instant Payment Platform for Spain’s Small Businesses

Spanish entrepreneurs to access Latin American technologies — who stands to gain most?

BBVA has unveiled Wipöp, a service for managing business payments. The platform streamlines all transactions in a single window. Trial phase begins in December, with a full launch planned for 2026.

BBVA has decided to bet on small businesses and freelancers by launching the innovative Wipöp platform in Spain. This new service allows companies and freelancers to monitor all incoming payments in real time, without switching between different systems. Testing will start as early as December, with a full rollout planned for the first half of 2026.

Wipöp is more than just another payment system. It’s built on Openpay, the Mexican fintech company BBVA acquired back in 2017. Over the years, the technology has proven itself in Latin America, where both clients and transaction volumes have continued to grow. Now, Spanish entrepreneurs can take advantage of these solutions tailored to the local market.

The platform is designed for businesses of all types—from small shops to large online marketplaces. Every transaction—from card payments and Bizum to Google Pay and Apple Pay—is available through a single interface. All transaction data is displayed in one window, making it easy to track payments, issue refunds, or resolve disputes without wasting time on bureaucracy.

Technology for growth and scaling

BBVA emphasizes that Wipöp is more than just a payment tool. The bank aims to become a true partner for entrepreneurs, supporting them at every stage of their growth. The service will be available not only to BBVA clients, but also to those who bank elsewhere. This opens up new opportunities for companies looking to grow without having to switch their trusted financial partners.

In the near future, the platform will mainly focus on online commerce. However, by the end of 2026, solutions for offline businesses will be introduced: in-store terminals, tools for startups, and even special options for recurring payments or sales via social media. This approach is designed to help small businesses adapt more quickly to the digital economy and compete with major players.

The Spanish market is on the brink of change

BBVA makes no secret of its ambitions: the bank intends to strengthen its leadership in payment services and become the go-to choice for businesses of all sizes. In its 2025–2028 strategic plan, the bank is focusing on personalized services and integrating artificial intelligence to engage with clients in real time. In the first nine months of this year, BBVA attracted nearly 9 million new customers worldwide, including 780,000 in Spain. Notably, 100,000 of them are small business owners and self-employed professionals.

Lending to this segment in Spain has grown by 22% over the past year, and BBVA’s share in opening new accounts for entrepreneurs continues to increase. The bank is confident that Wipöp will become a key tool for further expansion, helping businesses not only streamline financial processes but also reach a new level of growth.
