Juan Carlos Barrabés, an entrepreneur and a figure in the high-profile investigation involving Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, appeared in the Senate today at the request of the opposition. He was summoned to testify before a parliamentary commission investigating the details of the so-called ‘Koldo case.’ However, Barrabés immediately stated his stance: he would not be answering senators’ questions, citing the ongoing judicial proceedings.
At the very start of the hearing, Barrabés made a brief statement. He emphasized that he has no business or professional ties with Koldo García. According to him, he has never been involved in signing contracts, issuing licenses, distributing government subsidies, or any other transactions where Koldo García or individuals connected to the Delorme operation were involved.
The businessman also noted that he would not be responding to questions that could be subject to judicial investigation. He explained that this was necessary to protect his rights and to avoid harming his own legal defense. Barrabés added that he is confident in the legality of his actions, as well as those of the companies he is involved with, and expressed hope that this will be confirmed during the investigation.
The Begoña Gómez Case
Barrabés is involved in a case being investigated by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who is looking into possible crimes committed by Begoña Gómez. The investigation centers on allegations of embezzlement, influence peddling, business corruption, illegal appropriation of software, and the creation of a university department at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM).
Investigators are particularly interested in Barrabés’ role in the alleged episodes of corruption and influence peddling. His name appears in the case files as one of the possible participants in schemes involving the allocation of public contracts and grants.
Barrabés’ Position
During Senate hearings, Barrabés sought to distance himself from those implicated in the Koldo case. He emphasized that he had no contact with Koldo García and was not involved in any operations linked to him. According to the businessman, all activities carried out by his companies were transparent and in accordance with the law.
Barrabés also stated that he would not answer questions that could be used against him in court. He reminded those present that the investigation is ongoing, and any comments could impact the proceedings. Concluding his remarks, he expressed confidence that his innocence would be proven.
Reaction in the Senate
The senators present at the meeting expressed dissatisfaction with Barrabes’ refusal to answer questions. Opposition representatives insisted on the need for clarification regarding several episodes related to the entrepreneur’s activities and his possible connections with other individuals involved in the case.
Despite the pressure, Barrabes stood by his position and refused to disclose details, invoking the rights granted to him by law. His stance sparked lively debate among commission members and became a topic of discussion in political circles.
Investigation Progress
The case involving Begoña Gómez and related episodes continues to be in the spotlight of Spanish public attention. The investigation is proceeding along several lines, including potential misuse of public funds and the creation of university structures in violation of the law.
Barrabes, as one of the key figures in the case, has yet to provide substantive testimony. His refusal to cooperate with the Senate commission is explained by the need to observe procedural rules and protect his interests in court. The investigation is ongoing, and new developments may emerge in the near future.
