Price surge Butane cylinder in Spain now costs 16.35 euros

From June 18, butane prices will rise by nearly 5 percent

From June 18, the price of a butane cylinder in Spain will rise by almost 5%. This increase is linked to higher raw material and transportation costs. The new price will affect millions of households and small towns.

The sharp rise in the price of butane cylinders in Spain from June 18 directly affects families who rely on this energy source for cooking and heating. The new price—€16.35 for a standard cylinder—is the highest in recent months and is driven by several factors. For many residents of small towns and rural areas without access to a gas network, this change means extra strain on household budgets.

According to RUSSPAIN, the main reasons for the price hike are a 16.6% increase in transportation costs and a 3.2% rise in raw material prices. Additionally, a slight strengthening of the euro against the dollar has also influenced the final price. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge notes that the price is reviewed every two months, and this time the increase was close to the maximum allowed limit of 5%.

Review mechanism

In Spain, the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders with a capacity of 8 to 20 kg is regulated by the government and is not subject to free market pricing. Cost revisions follow a clear formula that factors in global prices of propane and butane, transportation expenses, and currency fluctuations. If the total change exceeds 5%, the difference is carried over to the next period. This approach helps smooth out sudden spikes, but does not fully protect against rising costs.

In recent years, demand for butane cylinders has been gradually declining. Since 2021, LPG consumption in Spain has dropped by more than 12%. Despite this, around 57 million cylinders of various sizes were sold in 2025. For many households, especially in regions without gas infrastructure, butane remains the only alternative for cooking and heating.

Impact on households

The rising cost of cylinders is especially noticeable for low-income families and elderly people living in rural areas. In cities without gas networks, butane cylinders are used not only in homes, but also in small cafes, workshops, and markets. The new price could lead to reduced consumption and a search for alternatives, although for many, such options are not yet available.

According to RUSSPAIN, in recent years the government has been capping price increases to prevent a sharp rise in household expenses. However, even under current regulations, every new price adjustment sparks debate and concern among consumers.

Context and trends

Energy price spikes in Spain occur regularly, especially during periods of instability in global markets. Similar surges in cylinder prices were already recorded in 2023, leading to temporary supply disruptions in some regions. In recent years, authorities have tightened price controls to minimize the impact of external factors on the domestic market. Nevertheless, the gradual decline in butane consumption continues, and the transition to alternative energy sources is proceeding slowly.
