Spain urgently recalls popular cheese over dangerous bacteria

Urgent inspection of Camembert cheese in Madrid and Catalonia stores

Spanish authorities have ordered the immediate removal of Camembert cheese from store shelves after the detection of a hazardous bacteria. The recall affects shops in Madrid and Catalonia and may impact other regions as well.

The sudden order for the urgent withdrawal of Camembert cheese from stores in Madrid and Catalonia has raised concerns among consumers and retailers. The reason is the detection of the dangerous Escherichia coli bacteria, which can cause severe food poisoning. This decision directly impacts food safety in Spain and highlights the importance of quality control for imported products.

The warning came from Germany via the European rapid alert system for food risks. Spanish authorities responded immediately, launching inspections and withdrawing the affected products. According to RUSSPAIN, the recall concerns Camembert de Normandie by La Réserve des Crémiers, sold in a wooden box, batch number 031241, with expiration dates 08/04/26 and 12/04/26. Each package weighs 250 grams and must be stored in the refrigerator.

Health risks

The Escherichia coli strain found in the cheese batch is capable of producing Shiga toxins. These bacteria can cause severe digestive disorders, including diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and other symptoms. Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Authorities advise against consuming this product and recommend seeking medical attention immediately if any symptoms of poisoning appear.

The Camembert incident has once again highlighted the need for strict quality control of dairy products, especially those imported from other EU countries. In recent years, Spain has already seen cases of food contamination by dangerous bacteria, leading to temporary sales restrictions on certain products.

Geographical distribution

Although most of the contaminated cheese was sent to stores in Madrid and Catalonia, experts do not rule out that part of the batch may have reached other regions of the country as well. In response, authorities issued a nationwide warning to minimize risks for the population. The rapid information exchange system between regions made it possible to promptly inform all concerned parties.

Retail chains have already begun removing Camembert de Normandie La Réserve des Crémiers from their shelves. Consumers are advised to check their purchases and not consume cheese with the specified batch numbers and expiration dates. If such products are found at home, it is recommended to return them to the store or dispose of them.

Response and consequences

The decision to immediately withdraw the cheese was made within the SCIRI system, which coordinates actions between various agencies and regions. This approach enables a swift response to threats and helps prevent mass poisoning cases. Authorities emphasize that the situation is under control, and further measures will depend on the results of laboratory tests and market monitoring.

The incident once again raises the issue of the need for regular inspections of food products, especially those imported from abroad. In recent years, Spain has faced cases where batches of meat and dairy products were withdrawn due to the detection of dangerous bacteria. For example, in 2024 a similar situation occurred with soft cheeses from France, and in 2025—with yogurts imported from Italy. Each such incident leads to tighter controls and a review of safety standards.

Recalling recent cases, in 2025 a batch of soft cheese in Andalucía was found to be contaminated with listeria, resulting in a temporary halt of sales in several major retail chains. In 2024, a consignment of imported dairy products was withdrawn in Valencia due to suspected salmonella. Such measures are always accompanied by a wide-ranging information campaign and swift action by authorities to prevent the spread of infection and protect public health.
