Cartagena launches major upgrade of port facilities new projects and oversight

Authorities in Cartagena invest in port security and development

The Port of Cartagena is changing its approach to cargo operations. New control systems are being introduced and capacity is expanding. This is impacting the region’s logistics and exports.

In recent months, the Port of Cartagena has been in the spotlight due to major changes that directly impact Murcia’s economy and the logistics of southeastern Spain as a whole. New investments in infrastructure and control systems promise not only to speed up cargo processing, but also to reduce costs for local companies. For the region’s exporters, this means they can send products abroad faster and more securely—an important advantage amid growing competition among the country’s ports.

Investments and new projects

At a recent meeting between the president of Autoridad Portuaria de Cartagena (APC), Pedro Pablo Hernández, and the development advisor Jorge García Montoro, key directions for the port’s development were discussed. The focus was on upgrades being carried out at Santa Lucía and San Pedro docks, where strategic projects are already underway. A particular highlight is the launch of a new Border Control Point (Puesto de Control Fronterizo, PCF), which will increase the number of inspection gates from four to fourteen. This will speed up cargo clearance, enhance security, and ensure transparency in export operations. There are also plans to expand staffing to support the new facilities.

At the same time, work is underway to upgrade the surface at the fruit and vegetable terminal. This measure is expected to boost the port’s competitiveness, especially for short-sea routes. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, such steps could attract new operators and grow Cartagena’s share in the container shipping market.

Impact on business and logistics

Regional authorities emphasize that developing port infrastructure is key to reducing logistics costs for local companies. Currently, many businesses are forced to use neighboring ports, which not only increases transportation expenses but also has a greater negative impact on the environment. New projects in Cartagena aim to change this situation by offering exporters more competitive conditions.

During the visit, representatives of APC and the government of Murcia also discussed plans to expand the port. Among the top priorities are the construction of the new El Gorguel dock and the multifunctional Barlomar terminal. These facilities are seen as strategic for the future growth of both the port and the region’s economy as a whole.

Control and security

Special attention is given to safety and control. The new Border Control Point will not only speed up cargo processing but also enhance the protection of exports. Increasing the number of inspection gates and expanding staff are steps designed to minimize delays and reduce risks for businesses.

The port has previously launched projects to upgrade its infrastructure. For example, investment in the reconstruction of the San Pedro pier helped accelerate cargo handling and improve operational safety. These measures are part of an overall strategy to modernize the port and attract new clients.

Reference and context

In recent years, Spanish ports have been actively investing in infrastructure upgrades and the implementation of advanced control systems. Similar projects are underway in Valencia and Algeciras, where terminal modernization has already led to increased cargo volumes and reduced processing times. The adoption of new technologies and expansion of capacity are becoming the norm for Spain’s port sector, helping the country maintain its competitiveness in the global logistics market.
