Central Madrid Roads to Close on November 25 Due to Anti-Violence Against Women Protests

Route, schedule, and tips for Madrid residents – how traffic will change on the Day Against Violence

Large-scale demonstrations against violence towards women will take place in Madrid on November 25. Key streets in the city center will be closed in the evening. Residents are advised to avoid driving and use the metro instead.

Large-scale marches will disrupt the city’s usual rhythm

The evening of November 25 in Madrid promises to be extraordinary: thousands will take to the streets in support of the fight against violence towards women. On this day, recognized worldwide as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the capital will host two major demonstrations. Organizers have chosen different routes, leading to significant traffic restrictions in the very heart of the city.

One group will start at 7:00 PM from Atocha Square and finish at Jacinto Benavente Square. The second march will begin at 6:30 PM at the intersection of Alcalá and Gran Vía, heading toward Plaza de España. Both events are expected to draw large crowds, with the routes passing through some of the busiest avenues in the city center.

Which streets will be closed, and when

City authorities have issued a warning: traffic will be restricted not only in the evening but also in the morning hours. From 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, temporary closures are possible near Las Ventas arena, on Alcalá Street, and at Manuel Becerra Square. The main disruptions for drivers will occur from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM, when Gran Vía, Atocha, Jacinto Benavente, and nearby streets will be closed.

Special attention is on Gran Vía, where traffic will be nearly paralyzed for several hours. Drivers are advised to plan their routes in advance and, if possible, avoid traveling through the city center. Expect traffic jams and delays in surface public transport.

Recommendations for Madrid residents and visitors

The municipality strongly advises against using private cars in central areas on this day. The most convenient way to get around will be the metro: lines L1 and L5 (Gran Vía station), as well as L1, C1, C2, C3, C4a, C4b, C5, C7, and C8 (Atocha station) will operate as usual, although temporary entrance restrictions may occur due to large crowds.

Passengers are advised to check schedules in advance and be prepared for possible route changes. If stations become overcrowded, entrances may be temporarily closed to regulate the flow of people.

Reasons and scale of the demonstrations

Organizers cite alarming statistics as the reason for the marches: in 2025 alone, 38 women in Spain were killed by partners or ex-partners, and 289 children lost their mothers. Violence remains one of the country’s most pressing problems, despite efforts by authorities and public organizations.

This year, representatives of various movements and associations, as well as officials, will join the events. The Minister for Equality has already confirmed her participation to show support for the victims and draw attention to the need for systemic change.

How the city will change for one evening

Mass gatherings are nothing new for Madrid, but on November 25, the city truly comes to a standstill. The glowing shop windows, bustling streets, and everyday rush give way to columns of people with banners and slogans. On this evening, the capital becomes a stage for solidarity and the fight for women’s rights.

Residents and visitors should prepare in advance for changes to their usual routines: adjust plans, choose alternate routes, and be patient. Despite any inconvenience, these events serve as a reminder of the importance of public dialogue and the need for change.
