With the arrival of autumn, mountain landscapes transform, taking on warm hues. This season turns the northern regions of the country into a true paradise for nature lovers and those who appreciate stunning views. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city lies one of the most breathtaking hiking trails, leading right into the heart of a protected area.
Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is a truly unique place. It’s the only park of its status in Catalonia and one of just fourteen nationwide. Established in 1955, it spans more than 40,000 hectares, covering land across several comarcas: Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Sobirà, and Pallars Jussà. Its greatest treasure is more than two hundred glacial lakes, whose crystal-clear waters reflect the majestic mountain peaks. Surrounding them are dense forests of fir, black pine, and beech, which at this time of year create an unparalleled palette of amber and ochre shades.
The adventure begins at the Prat de Pierró parking lot, located just a few minutes’ drive from the charming Pyrenean village of Espot. From here, a well-marked hiking trail known as “Ruta de l’Isard” (the Path of the Chamois) sets off, drawing travelers deep into a dense forest where the air is filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. Specially laid wooden walkways make for a comfortable journey along the banks of the Escrita river, crossing it over picturesque bridges. Gradually, the path joins the larger GR-11 route, and the forest gives way to alpine meadows offering panoramic views of the tallest peaks. Halfway along, you’ll encounter the tiny chapel of Sant Maurici—an ideal spot for a short rest. Just ten minutes further on, the park’s main attraction comes into view: the Sant Maurici lake, dominated by two iconic rock formations known as “Los Encantats” (the Enchanted). From this tranquil waterside, the trail gently ascends toward the Ratera lake and its famous cascading waterfall, where water dramatically tumbles down the rocky ledges.
These areas are home to more than two hundred species of vertebrates. Here you can encounter the Pyrenean chamois, marmots, wild boars, or roe deer. Bearded vultures and golden eagles soar overhead. Alpine meadows are dotted with plants adapted to the harsh conditions, such as gentians or saxifrages. The round-trip walk is about four kilometers and usually takes around an hour and fifteen minutes, but few manage to stick to that time. The beauty of the landscape compels you to stop at nearly every step to take photos or simply enjoy the silence. Comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended, as mountain weather can change quickly. It’s also wise to bring a small supply of food and water. After your walk, consider visiting the villages of Espot or Esterri d’Àneu to experience the authentic atmosphere. The final reward is the view from the observation deck, where the reflection of the mountains in the calm water will leave no doubt why Aigüestortes is rightly considered one of the most beautiful corners of Catalonia.
