Catalonia is once again under the grip of severe weather: heavy rains continue to batter the region, with the situation in the province of Girona causing particular concern. Since early morning, local residents have been receiving emergency alerts from civil protection services. Officials admit the flood risk is extremely high, and it is too early to relax. In some areas, rivers have already overflowed, bringing everyday life to a standstill.
Authorities have decided to suspend classes in several comarcas of Girona: Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Selva, and Gironès. Parents are advised to keep their children at home, and all residents are urged to avoid any travel until the evening. The reason is clear: roads are turning into rivers, and the downpour shows no sign of stopping.
Roads under water
Transport in the region is nearing a critical point. In Girona, three major routes have been completely closed due to the severe weather. On the C-252 section between Vilabertran and Peralada, traffic is at a standstill—water has flooded the road and drivers are forced to seek detours. In Forallac, the GI-644 is shut down, while in Palafrugell, the GIV-6546 is also impassable. Motorists stuck in traffic jams have been sharing photos of submerged vehicles and eroded shoulders on social media.
The situation is further complicated in neighboring Barcelona (Barcelona), specifically in the municipality of Guardiola de Berguedà, where road traffic on the BV-4024 has not been restored for several days. In addition to the rain, the area has been hit by a snow blockade—snow isn’t melting, and clearing equipment is unable to cope. As a result, part of the region is effectively cut off from the outside world.
Residents’ reaction
Panic among locals is mounting. People are canceling trips en masse, shops and cafes are emptying, and the streets look unusually deserted. Videos are appearing on social media showing water rapidly flooding yards and basements, while residents rush to shore up doors with sandbags. Many fear a repeat of last year’s floods that caused massive damage.
Emergency services are working to the limit. Firefighters and rescue workers are patrolling the most dangerous areas and helping to evacuate residents from low-lying neighborhoods. Authorities warn that if conditions worsen, electricity may need to be temporarily cut off in several communities to prevent accidents.
Forecasts and recommendations
Meteorologists offer little hope: heavy rains are expected to continue at least until evening and may intensify in some areas. Residents are urged not to leave home unless absolutely necessary, to follow updates from civil protection services, and to be ready for emergency evacuation. Special attention should be given to the elderly and families with children—they are advised to prepare an emergency supply of water, food, and medications in advance.
Authorities emphasize that the situation remains tense, and everyone must exercise maximum caution. With nature setting its own rules, safety is the top priority. Catalonia is facing another challenge, and only discipline and solidarity will help minimize the impact of the elements.
