In the northern regions of Catalonia, residents and tourists face heightened danger in the coming day as meteorologists forecast a severe storm with wind gusts up to 140 km/h and heavy snowfall. Authorities have already activated emergency protocols to minimize risks for the population. This decision comes in response to life-threatening conditions, hazards to transport, and potential disruptions to infrastructure.
According to El Pais, on Saturday evening, residents of the northern parts of the comarques of Cerdanya, Berguedà, Ripollès, and Alt Empordà received an Es-Alert emergency message on their mobile phones. Officials strongly advise against any outings or travel between 7:00 and 16:00 on Sunday due to forecasted hurricane-strength winds, which could cause falling trees, damage to power lines, and other emergency situations.
Storm warning
In addition to strong winds, waves over four meters high are expected along the Costa Brava (Girona) coastline, especially in Cap de Creus and Begur. This poses further risks to maritime transport and coastal areas. El Pais notes that meteorologists distinguish this situation from recent storms: this time the main impact will be felt in the middle and high mountain regions, rather than across all of Catalonia.
According to Meteocat’s forecast, worsening weather conditions will begin overnight Saturday and last until late Sunday evening. During this period, power outages, traffic disruptions, and reduced visibility due to blizzards are possible. Authorities warn that the combination of strong winds and precipitation may lead to snowdrifts and a sharp drop in temperature.
Situation in the mountains
Snow has already been reported in mountain areas: at altitudes above 1,400 meters, snow cover reaches 20 centimeters. Throughout the day, the snow line is expected to drop to 600 meters, expanding the area of potentially dangerous zones. Experts warn that these conditions could trigger snowstorms, significantly hindering travel and posing extra risks for drivers and pedestrians.
Imma Solé, deputy head of the Protección Civil operations team, clarified that the greatest danger is expected in mountain and foothill areas. Unlike previous storms, when the wind affected all of Catalonia, this time the epicenter will shift toward the Pyrenees. Residents and visitors in these regions should exercise particular caution and follow official recommendations.
Consequences and recommendations
Authorities emphasize that the combination of strong winds, snow, and waves may temporarily isolate certain localities and disrupt transport as well as utility services. Emergency response plans have already been activated, and rescue services are on high alert. According to El Pais, no serious incidents have been reported so far, but the situation could change rapidly.
Residents are advised to prepare in advance for possible power outages, avoid travel, and stay indoors. Particular attention is being given to road safety and areas near power lines. If the situation worsens, emergency services are ready to respond quickly to calls.
In recent years, Catalonia has already experienced similar weather events. For example, in early 2025, a severe storm led to widespread power outages and temporarily blocked roads in the Pyrenees. The consequences then affected thousands of residents and tourists. Similar incidents have occurred in other parts of Spain, where extreme weather has caused interruptions to transport and public utilities. These events highlight the importance of timely public information and preparedness for emergencies.
