For the first time in the province of Girona, a life sentence with the possibility of review has been handed down. The court found Alberto Pinto Pérez, a resident of Campdevànol, guilty of especially grave crimes against his young partner. The tragedy occurred in the autumn of 2022, when he carried out a series of brutal acts that led to the woman’s death.
The case was heard with a jury, which unanimously found the defendant guilty on all counts. In addition to murder, he was charged with sexual assault and systematic abuse. The court saw no grounds for leniency, despite the defense’s attempts to cite mental health issues and substance abuse.
The investigation revealed that, over several days in September 2022, the man subjected his 21-year-old partner to agonizing torture. Authorities determined that his actions were aimed at demonstrating power and complete control over the victim. Expert assessments found no signs of psychosis or serious disorders, and tests showed there was no drug or alcohol abuse at the time of the crime.
The court sentenced Alberto Pinto Pérez to the maximum penalty—life imprisonment with the possibility of review, as well as an additional 17 years in prison for sexual assault and ongoing abuse. He is also banned from approaching the victim’s relatives within 500 meters for five years after his release, and from possessing any weapons. After serving his main sentence, he will be subject to ten more years of supervision.
Compensation for the family and consequences of the verdict
The court ordered 200,000 euros to be paid to each of the victim’s parents, the same amount to her sister, and 20,000 euros to her aunt. This ruling set an important precedent for the region, as such severe measures had not been imposed before. The verdict sparked widespread public attention and became a topic of discussion within Catalonia’s legal community.
The Alberto Pinto Pérez case marked the first time in Girona that a court imposed life imprisonment with the possibility of review. This move signals a tougher stance on crimes involving domestic violence and sexual assault, and demonstrates the judiciary’s determination to protect the rights of victims and their families.
