A new chapter in education is underway in Galicia: regional authorities have unveiled fresh initiatives at the international SIMO expo, aiming to completely overhaul the approach to teaching. The spotlight is on digital transformation, hybrid learning formats, and the integration of artificial intelligence into the daily routines of schools and colleges.
In recent years, the region has built a unique system where traditional methods are blended with cutting-edge digital tools. This balance has not only helped maintain high academic standards, but also fostered students’ technological skills and critical thinking. It all started with the introduction of electronic textbooks, and now Galicia is moving forward with a long-term strategy that covers every level of education.
The Digital Education Act and Artificial Intelligence
By 2026, Galicia plans to adopt Europe’s first regional law defining the rules for using digital technologies in schools. This new framework will set out the rights and responsibilities of everyone involved in education and establish clear guidelines for applying new tools, depending on students’ age and skill level. Special attention will be given to safety issues and the effective use of artificial intelligence.
Before the final version of the law is adopted, authorities are holding extensive consultations with teachers, parents, and experts. This approach aims to ensure that the real needs and expectations of all stakeholders are taken into account, making the new system as effective as possible.
EdugalIA: digital profiles and support for every student
One of the key initiatives will be the introduction of the EdugalIA platform, which will consolidate each student’s academic performance and attendance records into a single digital profile. The system will not only track progress but also help identify students at risk of dropping out. Both parents and students will receive personalized support, while teachers will be able to respond to issues more quickly. The project is funded by European and regional funds and is set to launch in the near future.
As part of this strategy, schools have already introduced innovative spaces to develop engineering and scientific skills, while libraries have become hubs of digital reading. New subjects related to technology and digital literacy have been added to the curriculum.
Transforming vocational education
The Galician vocational education system is also evolving. The region has an innovation center that helps colleges adopt modern technologies, develop prototypes, and even launch startups based on student projects. Special attention is given to accelerated courses that train specialists for industries with especially high demand, from the automotive sector to digital services. These programs are designed for those who want to quickly acquire a new profession or upgrade their skills.
All this makes Galicia one of the leaders in implementing digital solutions in education. The region not only experiments but also sets standards for other autonomous communities and European countries, demonstrating how tradition and innovation can be combined to benefit students’ futures.
