Galician hotels report decline in overnight stays amid rising prices in October 2025

Hotels in Galicia Losing Tourists — Rising Prices and Fiercer Competition

In October 2025, hotels in Galicia experienced a 1.9% drop in overnight stays, while accommodation prices increased by 4.41%. Find out how trends compare across other regions of Spain.

In October 2025, Galicia’s hotels hosted 887,897 overnight stays, nearly 2% less than the same period last year. The average stay lasted 1.74 days. Despite the decline in demand, accommodation prices in the region continued to rise: the average nightly rate went up by 4.41% year-on-year, reaching €74.99. Revenue per room showed an even sharper increase of 13.2%, totaling €41.21.

National trends: rising demand and revenue

Nationwide, the situation was quite the opposite: in October 2025, Spanish hotels recorded more than 34.2 million overnight stays, up 1.3% from the previous year. The average revenue per occupied room rose to €120.5, and RevPAR (revenue per available room) reached €86.3, marking a 5.4% increase over last year. The hotel services price index also climbed by 4.7% across the country.

Foreign tourists drove most of the growth, with their overnight stays increasing by 2%, while domestic tourism saw a slight drop of 0.5%. Over the first ten months of 2025, total overnights in Spain rose by 0.9%, with domestic stays down by 0.2% and international ones up by 1.4%.

Travel demand by region: frontrunners and laggards

In October, the most popular destinations for Spanish tourists were Andalucía, Cataluña, and Valencia, accounting for nearly half of all overnight stays. Among foreign visitors, the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, and Cataluña attracted the most interest. The Balearics represented 26.5% of overnight stays, the Canaries 23.1%, and Cataluña 17% of all foreign guest stays.

Among individual tourist areas, Mallorca led by a wide margin, recording over 5.6 million overnight stays in a single month. The top three cities with the most visitors were Madrid, Barcelona, and Calvià. British and German tourists accounted for almost half of all foreign overnight stays, with 26.1% and 19.2% respectively. France, the USA, and the Netherlands were also major markets, providing 8.5%, 4.8%, and 4.2% of overnight stays.

Occupancy and competition: new challenges for the sector

In October 2025, hotel occupancy across Spain reached 61.8%, a 0.1% increase from the previous year. Occupancy dipped slightly on weekends, reaching 67.7%. In the Canary Islands, the rate climbed to 76.2%, and in southern Gran Canaria, it exceeded 82% on both weekdays and weekends. The city of Sóller recorded the highest occupancy, with up to 86% of rooms filled on weekends.

In Galicia, the situation is complicated by internal competition between airports and changes in airline routes. A decline in overnight stays in the region, amid rising prices and increasing competition from other destinations, is forcing the local hotel industry to seek new ways to attract guests. Meanwhile, in other regions of Spain, the hospitality sector continues to show steady growth, despite higher prices and seasonal fluctuations in demand.
