On Wednesday morning in Gijón, an unusual incident occurred: a woman in her ground-floor apartment suddenly fell through the floor and ended up in the shop located directly below. Emergency services responded immediately after being called to provide the necessary assistance to the victim.
It was determined that the collapse was caused by a longstanding humidity problem in the building. Over the years, moisture had gradually weakened the floor slabs between levels, ultimately leading to the sudden cave-in. The woman trapped by the collapse managed to free herself from the debris despite being shocked and frightened.
Two fire crews and a medical team were dispatched to the scene. Paramedics examined the victim and decided to transport her to Cabueñes Hospital for further evaluation. Fortunately, her injuries were minor and her life was not in danger.
City officials began inspecting the building to eliminate further risks for residents and visitors to the commercial premises. Authorities in Gijón urged property owners to pay closer attention to the technical state of their buildings, especially in areas with high humidity.
Residents of neighboring apartments were temporarily evacuated until the building could be thoroughly inspected. In the coming days, specialists will conduct a detailed examination to assess the extent of the damage and implement measures to restore the building’s safety.
In case you didn’t know, Gijón is one of the largest cities in the autonomous community of Asturias in northern Spain. The city is known for its port, industry, and developed infrastructure.
