Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Hit Eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands

Weather surprises: where to expect more rain and when warmth will return – Atmospheric surprises continue

Eastern regions of Spain and the Balearic Islands have been affected by intense storms and rainfall. Prolonged rains continue in the Canary Islands, while weather in the west of the country remains calm and warm.

Friday in Spain began with unstable and changing weather. Eastern provinces and the Balearic Islands were hit by storm fronts: in some areas, the rain poured down in torrents. The south of Aragón, eastern Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community, as well as certain areas of Murcia and eastern Andalusia, were particularly affected. On Ibiza, Formentera, and Mallorca, precipitation was especially intense, at times turning into full tropical downpours.

The Canary Islands were not spared either: the western territories of the archipelago were blanketed by prolonged and heavy rain, while the skies remained densely overcast. Meanwhile, the western part of mainland Spain enjoyed unusual stability for this time of year: the day passed calmly here, and the air warmed to pleasantly, at times even summer-like, temperatures.

Yellow weather alerts for thunderstorms and rain were issued in six of the country’s autonomous regions. On the Catalan coast, the heaviest rain fell in the morning, while in the rest of the country, cloud cover was variable, with low clouds prevailing over northern Galicia, Cantabria, and along the entire Mediterranean coast.

Weekend weather outlook: changes are on the way

By Friday evening, cloud cover increased in the Balearic region, as well as in the mountains of central and northern Spain. Thunderstorms returned to these areas, some of them quite strong in places. Rain continued in the Canary Islands, especially on the western islands, while precipitation was less significant in the eastern ones. Dense fog formed locally in northern Lugo and other areas in the north and east of the country, and morning sea mist appeared in the estuaries of Galician rivers.

Overall, temperatures across the country remained almost unchanged. In the western regions, the air warmed up to 30 degrees and above, particularly in Ourense, Badajoz, Córdoba, and Sevilla. Moderate easterly winds were observed in Cantabria and the Alboran Sea, while in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar, the winds occasionally picked up, becoming gusty.

What to expect in Spain in the coming days

Saturday is expected to be a transitional day: in the morning, brief showers are still possible along the Catalan coast, while in Galicia a new Atlantic front is forecast to arrive by evening. Thunderstorms are possible again in the center and east of the peninsula, as well as in the Balearics, with some being quite intense. In the Canary Islands, cloudiness will persist, with rain mainly affecting the west of the archipelago, while little to no precipitation is expected in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In Cantabria, temperatures will rise markedly, with thermometers in Bilbao approaching 30 degrees.

Sunday will bring new changes: a front moving in from Galicia will cover the northwest of the country, where heavy rainfall and overcast skies are expected. The rain will gradually shift eastward, affecting the center and the north of Extremadura. In Catalonia, isolated short showers are possible, while the rest of the Mediterranean coast will see more stable weather. Nighttime temperatures will rise, while daytime temperatures will become cooler in the northwest. In León and Ourense, daytime highs will not exceed 22 degrees, whereas summer warmth will persist in eastern Cantabria and the Guadalquivir valley.

Start of the week: new rains and temperature swings

Monday will greet residents of Spain with cloudy skies and rain, mainly affecting the northern regions and mountainous areas. In other parts of the country, precipitation will be brief, while the southeast will remain dry. In the Canary Islands, rain will subside and become less frequent.

Air temperatures will drop almost everywhere, but on the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, it will get warmer. In some southeastern areas and in Málaga province, thermometers will again rise above 30 degrees. Starting Tuesday, another wave of Atlantic fronts is expected, bringing new rains to Galicia, the Cantabrian regions, and Castilla y León. By midweek, temperatures will start to rise, and Wednesday and Thursday may surprise with unusually warm weather for this time of year.
