Barcelona is preparing to welcome back one of the city’s most iconic symbols: the blue tram, which for many years ran along Avinguda del Tibidabo. This historic line, known as Tramvia Blau, was launched in the early 20th century and became an integral part of the city’s history. The last trams operated in 2018, after which service was suspended due to the need for a major overhaul of the tracks and infrastructure.
Tibidabo Avenue Renovation and Plans to Relaunch the Tram
City hall has announced the start of preparations for a large-scale reconstruction of Avinguda del Tibidabo, with a budget allocation of 45 million euros. Officials emphasize that this will be one of the city’s most ambitious projects in recent years. In addition to restoring the tram line, the plan includes a complete modernization of the surrounding area—upgrading the roadway, creating new pedestrian zones, and building a modern stormwater drainage system.
Work is set to begin in 2026 with public consultations, where residents will be able to present their ideas for the neighborhood’s future design. The main phase of reconstruction will start in 2027. City authorities are not providing a specific completion date to avoid raising unrealistic expectations, but note that the project already has the backing of all political parties in the municipality.
Preserving Cultural Heritage and the Future of Tramvia Blau
Tramvia Blau is the last surviving tram from Barcelona’s historic network. Its cars, recognized as cultural heritage of national importance, have spent the past seven years parked in a depot on Bosch i Alsina Street. As part of the renovation, four out of seven cars will be fully restored and return to service, while the remaining three will be preserved as museum pieces.
City authorities emphasize that the route will continue to be managed by the municipal operator Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). This decision is important for employees and residents who were concerned the line might end up in private hands after the work was completed.
The significance of the project for the city and its residents
The return of the blue tram is not just about reviving a transit line—it’s a key step towards preserving the city’s identity. Avinguda del Tibidabo is famed for its modernist mansions and unique atmosphere, and for many years, the tram was an integral part of this landscape. The project also focuses on promoting sustainable mobility and improving the urban environment for all district residents.
The history of Tramvia Blau is closely linked to Dr. Salvador Andreu, who initiated the tram line and the famous amusement park at the summit of Tibidabo. More than a century later, the tram will once again become a symbol of Barcelona, bridging the city’s past and future.
