A high-profile investigation is still underway in Madrid involving the wife of Spain’s prime minister. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado from the 41st Investigative Court has tasked specialists from the UCO (Unidad Central Operativa) with conducting a thorough analysis of Begoña Gómez’s email correspondence over a period of more than seven years. This step became possible after the government administration provided a complete archive of emails related to her official activities.
The spotlight is focused not only on Gómez herself, but also on her advisor Cristina Álvarez. Both are suspected of potentially using state resources for private projects. Investigators aim to determine whether public funds were actually diverted for personal gain, and to clarify the role Álvarez may have played in this.
The presidential administration’s technical services have extracted all data from Gómez’s official email, covering the period from July 2018 to September 2025. This massive trove of information was handed over to the court on an electronic device. UCO must now sift through thousands of emails to identify those relevant to the investigation. Until this work is completed, the materials will not be available to other parties involved in the case.
At the same time, the ministry responsible for the presidential administration prepared a separate report. It details who authorized payments to Cristina Álvarez and on what basis since her appointment in July 2018. It turned out that over this period, five different heads of the personnel and payroll department had changed. The names of all secretaries directly supervising Álvarez were also provided.
Who Oversaw the Advisor’s Activities
The court is trying to establish who was directly responsible for overseeing Cristina Álvarez’s work and ensuring she did not engage in matters outside her official duties. The ministry explained that all payments went through mandatory checks by financial services, and appointment decisions were made at the deputy director of human resources level.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the judge is not disclosing details to the parties. It is expected that after reviewing the correspondence, the UCO will provide a report that could shed light on possible violations and clarify the degree of responsibility of each participant.
The investigation is ongoing, and new details may emerge soon that could impact the progress of the case and the political landscape in the country.
