Madrid authorities have decided to upgrade the security system of the municipal transport operator EMT by introducing unmanned aerial vehicles. The new 24-month contract includes not only the purchase of drones, but also an update of the vehicle fleet and other technical equipment needed to effectively protect the company’s assets and infrastructure.
The total budget allocated for this project comes to nearly 15 million euros, excluding taxes. The tender, published in the official regional bulletin, includes three separate lots. In addition to purchasing the equipment, the budget covers staff training, developing emergency response plans, and introducing innovative solutions in cybersecurity and process automation.
Technology and contractor requirements
Companies wishing to participate in the tender must submit detailed emergency response plans and demonstrate a high level of staff training. Particular emphasis is placed on ongoing professional development programs, proficiency with modern digital tools, and experience in securing critical infrastructure.
An important evaluation criterion will be the quality of technical solutions: from the clarity of drone footage and the speed of their deployment to operational autonomy and the professionalism of operators. In addition, EMT will consider the economic aspect of the proposals, the contractors’ willingness to provide additional services in case of unplanned tasks, and workforce stability throughout the entire duration of the contract.
New Center for Electric Buses
At the same time, the city is launching another large-scale project — the construction of a modern La Elipa Operations Center, designed exclusively for servicing electric buses. More than €366 million has been allocated for its construction, equipment, and operation. The concession will last for 20 years, of which 17 will be dedicated directly to operations.
The new center will be located on the site of a former bus depot in La Elipa and will become a key element in the city’s CO₂ emissions reduction strategy. The facility is expected to accommodate over 300 electric buses, while the building’s roof will be fitted with more than 7,000 solar panels. The concessionaire’s duties will include not only constructing and equipping the complex, but also ensuring uninterrupted power supply for vehicle charging and maintaining all equipment in working order.
Eco-friendliness and Innovation in Urban Transport
The new facility will cover nearly 40,000 square meters, with most of the space allocated for bus parking and technical areas for maintenance and repairs. Authorities emphasize that launching the center will be an important step toward environmentally friendly public transport and will help Madrid strengthen its position among European cities implementing cutting-edge solutions in urban mobility and safety.
