Madrid Proposes Removing Juan Carlos I’s Name from Universities and Hospitals

Scandals, Anniversaries, and Oblivion: Why Spain Wants to Erase Its Former King's Name from Public View

There is a call in Madrid to remove Juan Carlos I’s name from public institutions, following a series of scandals and his absence at the coronation anniversary. The decision could reshape attitudes toward the monarchy in Spain.

A new debate has erupted in Spain over the former monarch’s place in the country’s history. This time, the initiative comes from left-wing politicians in Madrid, who aim to have the name of Juan Carlos I removed from university buildings, hospitals, and even street signs. The move is prompted by a series of scandals that tainted the ex-king’s final years, as well as his conspicuous absence from the 50th anniversary celebration of his coronation.

The Más Madrid party, through the Sumar parliamentary group, is preparing an appeal to the Congress of Deputies. Their goal is to ensure the former head of state’s name disappears from public institution names. According to the proponents, this would help modernize national symbols in line with current ideals of transparency and integrity in government. They believe such a step would strengthen trust in democracy and encourage society to rethink its historical memory.

An Anniversary Without Its Guest of Honor

Notably, Juan Carlos I was not even invited to the official event marking the 50th anniversary of his coronation. The attendees will include King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and their daughters, while the former king will spend the day in exile, far from his homeland. His absence has become a symbol of the rift between the former monarch and the Spanish state, highlighting just how deeply his role is being re-evaluated.

In recent years, the name Juan Carlos I has become less associated with Spain’s transition to democracy and more with corruption scandals and international investigations. His departure to Abu Dhabi was the climax of this story. Even the publication of his memoirs, in which he tries to explain his actions and express regret, failed to change public opinion. Many believe that his past achievements cannot excuse the mistakes and misdeeds of recent years.

Rethinking the Legacy

The question of whether Juan Carlos I’s name should remain on buildings and streets has divided Spanish society. Supporters of the Más Madrid initiative are convinced it’s time to renew the country’s symbols to reflect current values. Opponents argue that such steps attempt to erase an important part of history, as it was during his reign that Spain experienced unprecedented prosperity and democratic reforms.

In his memoirs, the former monarch himself admits to making mistakes but believes his achievements are undervalued. He blames his situation not only on his own missteps, but also on the actions of the current authorities, whom he accuses of deliberately distancing themselves from him. He is especially troubled by the rift with his son, the current king, who, according to Juan Carlos, has put duty above family ties.

The Monarchy’s Future in Doubt

It remains unclear whether the Más Madrid initiative will gain support from the majority of lawmakers. Monarchist sentiments are still strong in the country, and major parties are in no hurry to take radical steps. However, the very fact that such a proposal has emerged shows that attitudes toward the monarchy and its symbols in Spain are changing. In the coming years, the country may see new attempts to reconsider its past and reassess the role of former leaders.
