The pseudo-union Manos Limpias, which initiated the investigation into the Spanish Prime Minister’s wife, has been left without legal representation. The lawyer and spokesperson who previously represented the organization have officially withdrawn from the case. They explained that what began as a legal issue has escalated into a major political and media battle.
On Monday, the court received a joint resignation letter signed by lawyer Carlos Perales from the law firm Preico Jurídicos. In a letter addressed to the judge, the lawyer expressed dissatisfaction with Manos Limpias’ stance and stressed that, under current circumstances, working further was impossible as independence and professional standards were under threat.
Case becomes politicized, defense team withdraws
According to the former prosecution representatives, what started as a strictly legal matter has moved beyond the confines of the law. The case has turned into a stage for political arguments and media manipulation. The lawyers note that Manos Limpias’ actions are increasingly driven not by legal arguments but by political factors, an agenda to sway public opinion, and a desire to cement a particular ideological position.
In their view, this approach may be acceptable for the organization itself, but it is incompatible with the principles of legal practice, which are based on independence and objectivity. The letter also states that the trial is being used as a tool to achieve political ends, undermining trust in the defense and violating professional standards.
Communication issues and final rupture
A representative from Manos Limpias tried to inform the organization of their intention to end cooperation as early as September last year, but the message went unanswered. After several months of waiting, the lawyers decided to officially notify the court of their resignation, considering their obligations to the client fulfilled.
The judge was informed that more than three days had passed since the last attempt to contact Manos Limpias, without any response. This became the formal basis for a complete termination of the relationship between the legal team and the organization.
The Begoña Gómez case and what lies ahead
Manos Limpias was one of the parties bringing charges in the case against the wife of the head of government, who is suspected of several economic crimes. The investigation began after the organization filed a complaint in April 2024. In addition to Manos Limpias, the case involves political parties and civic movements, including far-right and religious groups.
The withdrawal of the lawyers from the case may affect the course of the investigation and shift the balance of power between the parties. The future of the case remains uncertain, while the proceedings continue to generate widespread public attention and debate in political circles.
