At the start of the week, residents of eastern regions of Spain and the Balearic Islands once again found themselves in the spotlight due to adverse weather conditions. Following a tense weekend marked by flooded city streets and flight cancellations at Ibiza airport, the situation has yet to stabilize.
Meteorologists note that the heaviest rainfall is expected between Tarragona and Valencia. Torrential downpours are possible in this area, which could lead to further local flooding and difficulties on the roads. Throughout the day, atmospheric instability will persist due to cold air at altitude, leading to the formation of storms and heavy showers not only along the coast but also in nearby areas.
In the morning, rain and thunderstorms will hit the Catalan coast, spreading by midday to coastal and foothill areas between Barcelona and the north of Alicante. Conditions are expected to be especially challenging in the area between Tarragona and Valencia. In the afternoon, thunderstorm clouds may reach the Pyrenees, the Iberian System, and parts of Castilla-La Mancha, and by evening, the Pityusic Islands.
Meanwhile, in the northwest, west, and southwest of the country, the weather will be calmer: mostly clear skies and a noticeable rise in temperatures are forecast. In some areas of southern Galicia and the Guadalquivir Valley, thermometers will approach 30 degrees. Interior regions in central and eastern Spain may face morning fog, while in the Alboran Sea, the south, and the Balearics, dust in the air is possible.
Easterly and northerly winds will strengthen along the Mediterranean coast, especially in the southeastern areas, where strong gusts are possible. In the rest of the country, winds will be light, with occasional moderate gusts in the Canary Islands, the north, and the La Mancha region. In the Canary Islands, cloud cover will persist in the north, while the south will see more sunshine, although brief daytime showers are possible in the mountainous areas.
Starting tomorrow, forecasters predict gradual improvement, although isolated showers will still occur along the eastern coast and in the Balearic Islands. By midweek, calmer conditions are expected, but by the weekend a new Atlantic cyclone may arrive, bringing rain to the west of the country and a drop in temperatures.
