On Thursday night, residents of several towns in eastern Tenerife were awakened by mild tremors. Seismologists recorded a magnitude 3 earthquake, with the epicenter located about 25 kilometers from Fasnia, in the marine area.
Although the quake’s source was at a considerable depth, some residents of Güímar, Candelaria, and Arico reported feeling slight vibrations. However, there have been no reports of significant consequences or damage. For those who experienced the tremors, a special survey has been made available to describe their impressions and the circumstances of the event.
Seismic activity in this area is not unusual. In the past week alone, around thirty similar events have been recorded, and since the beginning of the month, the number has already reached one hundred. A similar incident occurred in June, when a slightly stronger tremor was detected in the same area.
Earthquake magnitude is measured on the Richter scale, where each unit represents a tenfold increase in released energy. For comparison, the highest recorded earthquake in the world reached 9.5, while in the Canary Islands such events are usually much weaker.
Seismologists are continuing to monitor the situation, but there is no cause for alarm. Island residents are already accustomed to such natural phenomena, which most often go unnoticed by the majority.
