A new wave of political disagreement has erupted in the Valencian Community over breast cancer prevention efforts. More than 90,000 women have not received invitations for mandatory screenings, sparking outrage among the opposition and concern among local residents.
Socialists claim that since the change of government in the region, the number of mammograms performed has significantly declined. According to their data, since the new head of government took office, the number of screenings has dropped by 12,000. In 2022, under the previous coalition, almost 229,000 procedures were carried out, but by 2024, that figure had fallen by several thousand. These numbers are concerning, as early detection of this serious disease is at stake.
Meanwhile, representatives of the current administration counter the accusations, pointing out that the previous term was marked by equipment and staff shortages. They say that now the region has more mammography units, which should improve access to screenings. However, the opposition insists that many women remain uninformed, not receiving invitations or test results if the findings are inconclusive.
The effectiveness of the screening system has been brought up for discussion in the regional parliament. The opposition is demanding explanations from the health chief: how many screenings have been outsourced to private companies, and do the procedures meet European standards? The authorities, in turn, accuse their opponents of trying to distract from other issues and point to past mistakes.
While politicians debate, thousands of women in Valencia are still waiting to receive their screening invitations, concerned about their health. The situation with breast cancer prevention in the region remains tense, and public dissatisfaction is growing.
