Powerful Storm Pedro Threatens Northern Spain with Wind, Snow and Rough Seas

Meteorologists on alert: drastic drop in temperature, strong winds and challenging weather – what to watch out for and how to stay safe

Storm Pedro is sweeping across Spain, bringing gale-force winds, snowfall and storms to the north of the country. Transport disruptions and a sharp drop in temperature are expected. Details on the unfolding situation and its consequences.

Northern regions of Spain are bracing for a major challenge as Storm Pedro, now officially named and classified as a hazardous meteorological event, approaches the country. This development could impact the daily lives of millions, disrupt transport links, and pose safety risks in coastal and mountainous areas.

In the coming days, strong winds, storm surges along the coast, and snowfall even at relatively low elevations are expected. Authorities warn of potential disruptions at ports, on roads, and railway lines, as well as risks for travelers and residents in northern provinces.

Storm warning

Storm Pedro is already the sixteenth dangerous cyclone this season, highlighting the unusual intensity of weather events in the region. Its name was chosen by the French meteorological service, as France was the first to declare a high alert. However, Spanish territories—especially on Wednesday and Thursday—are also expected to feel the full impact of the storm.

Forecasters predict that on Wednesday, most of the peninsula will experience cloudy skies and rain, with particularly heavy downpours expected in Galicia. Thunderstorms are possible here, while snow will begin falling in the northern mountains from 1,300 meters, gradually descending to 1,000 meters in the northwest.

Colder weather and snow

On Thursday, the situation will become more complicated: after the front passes, a cold and humid air mass will enter the country. Galicia, the Cantabrian coast, and the Pyrenees can expect prolonged and at times heavy rainfall with thunderstorms. Rain is also possible in the mountainous regions of central and northern Spain, but by evening, its intensity will decrease.

Temperatures will drop significantly: in the northern and central regions, daytime highs will not exceed 10 degrees. The snow line will lower to 700–1000 meters, which could result in snowfall in lowlands where such events are rare. Winds will strengthen to dangerous levels in the north, east, and the Balearic Islands.

Storm naming system

The introduction of official names for hazardous storms and atmospheric fronts enables faster and more effective communication with the public about looming threats. A cyclone receives a name when meteorological authorities issue orange or red wind warnings, as well as in cases of significant precipitation and wind gusts above 70 km/h.

This season, the list of names has already reached the letter ‘P’ — ‘Pedro.’ Five names remain in reserve: Regina, Samuel, Therese, Vitor, and Wilma. If this trend continues, the season could break the historical record for the number of dangerous storms.

Context and recent events

In recent years, Spain has increasingly faced extreme weather events. Last season, similar storms caused widespread power outages, road closures, and flight cancellations. The northern regions were particularly affected, with strong winds and heavy snowfall disrupting daily life. Authorities and emergency services are urging residents to pay attention to warnings and prepare in advance for potential disruptions to infrastructure.
