She was both a silent witness and an active participant in the shaping of modern Spanish democracy, from the final days of Franco’s dictatorship to the abdication and subsequent departure of her husband, King Juan Carlos. Receiving the highest honor of the Spanish crown, the Order of the Golden Fleece, from her son, King Felipe VI, stands as a symbolic act crowning decades of her service. Awarding the order is a recognition of Queen Sofía’s invaluable contribution to strengthening the monarchy. The second and equally discussed absence will be that of Honorary King Juan Carlos. His removal from official royal life following a series of scandals makes his attendance at such an event impossible.
