Limits of the Standard Formula’s Applicability

Researchers utilized the SPIDER computing suite to create digital models of plasma in a tokamak. Thousands of different states were simulated, varying not only pressure but also the current distribution within the plasma column. For each case, results from the standard formula were compared with precise values calculated based on fundamental physical laws.

The analysis showed that the formula provides reliable results only within a specific range of pressure and internal inductance ratios. If the sum of these parameters is close to one, the error is minimal. However, any deviation can cause the error to reach tens of percent. At low pressures, the formula overestimates values, while at high pressures, it underestimates them—an issue that is particularly critical for current and future reactors such as ITER.

Implications for Fusion Reactor Control

The discovery by Russian scientists is changing our understanding of the reliability of existing diagnostic methods. It is now clear that effective and safe plasma management requires new approaches that consider not only pressure but also current profiles. Otherwise, operators might overestimate or underestimate the stored energy, increasing the risk of a discharge failure or inefficient reactor operation.

The study proposes a more accurate method for analyzing diamagnetic measurements based on rigorous physical relationships. This approach allows real-time, reliable data collection on plasma conditions, which is especially important for configuring ignition and containment scenarios in next-generation tokamaks.

New Challenges for Theorists and Engineers

The study’s findings present the scientific community with the challenge of developing new analytical formulas to replace outdated methods. These formulas must be not only accurate but also simple enough to be used in automated control systems. Only by doing so will it be possible to ensure the stable and safe operation of fusion facilities, bringing us closer to the advent of industrial reactors based on controlled fusion.

The work of Russian physicists marks an important milestone in understanding the processes taking place in tokamak plasma. It has not only exposed weaknesses in traditional calculations but also proposed solutions, opening up new prospects for the development of fusion energy.
