Tensions remain high in Badalona following the recent eviction of residents from the former B9 institute building. Catalonia’s president Salvador Illa issued a statement reaffirming that authorities are doing everything possible to resolve the social tensions. He called on city residents to remain calm and assured them that the law will be fully upheld.
Illa emphasized that irresponsible actions will not go without consequences, hinting at the role of Badalona’s mayor Xavier García Albiol in the situation. According to the president of the Generalitat, signs of improvement are expected soon, and the government will act based on the principles of humanity and respect for every individual.
Authorities’ response
During a phone conversation with Albiol, Illa chose not to make the details of their discussion public, noting that everything necessary was said privately. Meanwhile, the mayor of Badalona continues to insist that the evicted camp was a criminal operation rife with mafia activity, prostitution, and drug trafficking. According to him, the group’s leaders charged people for the right to stay in the building overnight.
In an interview with local radio, Albiol stated that there are no long-term housing arrangements planned for the more than 400 evicted residents. He stressed that the city authorities will not allow the reappearance of similar settlements.
Protests and support
Last night, around four hundred people took to the streets of Badalona to show solidarity with the evicted residents of B9. The demonstration took place outside the former Can Bofí Vell shelter, which had previously been closed by order of the mayor but was recently reoccupied by a group of people who left B9 after the eviction.
Salvador Illa highlighted the important role of social organizations, which, he said, help resolve issues quietly and without publicity. He expressed gratitude to those who support the affected residents without seeking media attention.
Political disagreements
The situation in Badalona has sparked political controversy. JxCat party leader Carles Puigdemont accused Salvador Illa of lacking leadership and held him responsible for growing tensions. According to Puigdemont, the actions of the Badalona mayor have only made the conflict worse.
Illa, for his part, made it clear he does not intend to engage in public disputes and prefers to address issues directly with those involved. He emphasized that the government’s main priority is to restore order and guarantee the rights of all city residents.
