Santos Serdán Appears in Navarre Court After Release From Prison

Scandal Surrounding Former PSOE Secretary — New Details Emerge in the Case

Santos Serdán has made another appearance at the Navarre court. He is required to check in every two weeks. The court has restricted his freedom following his release from prison. The investigation remains ongoing.

Former organizational secretary of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, Santos Cerdán, arrived at the Court of First Instance in Tafalla, Navarre, on Monday morning. This is his first appearance since being released from prison, where he was held by decision of the Supreme Court. Cerdán currently lives in his hometown of Milagro, where he returned after leaving the Soto del Real prison in Madrid on November 19.

That day, Cerdán appeared at the courthouse doors just after opening, a little after nine in the morning. He did not speak to reporters waiting outside. The car that brought him stopped right at the entrance to avoid unnecessary attention. When asked when he would comment on the case, Cerdán replied briefly that he would do so “in due time” and quickly left the courthouse grounds.

Court restrictions

The Supreme Court, specifically Judge Leopoldo Puente, previously ruled to release Cerdán from custody. The decision stated that the risk of evidence being destroyed had significantly decreased, although the investigation is still uncovering new facts. As a precautionary measure, the court ordered Cerdán to check in every two weeks and banned him from leaving Spain. His passport was confiscated.

Serdán was allowed to appear in court at any time during the day, but he chose to do so immediately after the courthouse opened. Entry and exit to the building were monitored by Navarra police to ensure order and security. Journalists and cameramen waited across the street but were unable to get a comment from Serdán.

Case details

The case files include new evidence that investigators believe may indicate Serdán’s involvement in financial misconduct. Specifically, it concerns a large commission received for participating in a project to demolish the state university in Zaragoza. A company associated with Serdán allegedly received a substantial amount for brokering the implementation of this project.

Although the court eased the pretrial restrictions, investigators do not rule out the emergence of new episodes. In the coming weeks, Serdán is required to continue reporting to the court, as well as adhere to a travel ban. His lawyers have not made any public statements, and Serdán himself is avoiding contact with the press.

Public reaction

Serdán’s appearance in court attracted heightened attention not only from journalists, but also from local residents. In Milagro, where he currently lives, people are discussing the case details and the possible consequences for the former PSOE official’s political career. At the same time, political circles continue to debate how serious the charges are and how they could affect the party’s image.

Navarra police have increased security measures around the courthouse to prevent possible incidents. Throughout Serdán’s time at the court, the situation remained calm despite the large media presence.

Investigation continues

The investigation into the Serdán case is ongoing. Judicial authorities are reviewing new evidence and preparing further legal actions. Additional hearings are expected soon, which may reveal further details. Serdán, for his part, has yet to clarify his position regarding the charges.

Over the coming weeks, public and media interest in the case is likely to remain strong. Both the press and the public continue to follow developments, awaiting new statements and court decisions.
