Spain debates new energy drink restrictions for teenagers

Why energy drinks are being restricted for young people and what risks authorities are warning about

Spanish authorities are preparing to ban the sale of energy drinks to teenagers. The decision comes in response to rising health concerns among young people. The new rules could reshape the country’s beverage market.

Introducing restrictions on the sale of energy drinks to teenagers could become one of the most significant changes for Spanish families in 2026. The authorities are considering a total ban on these drinks for those under 16, and for young people up to 18—a limit on products with high caffeine content. This decision comes in response to alarming statistics: most residents support tougher regulations, and experts are noting a rise in cases of adverse health effects from energy drinks among adolescents.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Social Policy of Spain, headed by Pablo Bustinduy, initiated a discussion on new measures after the release of recent data on the impact of advertising and the accessibility of energy drinks. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, nine out of ten Spaniards surveyed believe that such drinks should not be available to children and teenagers. Support is especially strong among young people: nearly 90% of respondents aged 18 to 35 favor stricter controls.

Reasons for the new regulations

The decision to introduce restrictions is based on studies showing that excessive energy drink consumption leads to sleep disorders, behavioral changes, and even heart problems. In 2021, the AESAN scientific committee published a report indicating that high doses of caffeine can cause not only insomnia but also psychological disorders and negatively affect the cardiovascular system of adolescents.

Last year, a ban was already introduced on the sale of energy drinks in schools and other educational institutions. Now, the authorities intend to go further and restrict access to these beverages for minors throughout the entire country. According to the ministry, such measures will help create a safer environment for children and reduce the impact of aggressive advertising.

The role of advertising and public opinion

Particular attention is being paid to advertising for products high in sugar and caffeine, which experts believe creates false perceptions among teenagers about the benefits and safety of energy drinks. The World Health Organization notes that constant exposure to such advertising increases the consumption of unhealthy products among young people and leads to long-term health problems.

Additional restrictions on the advertising of unhealthy products targeting children and adolescents are expected to be introduced soon. Authorities believe that only a comprehensive approach will reduce risks and protect the younger generation from negative consequences.

Consequences for the market and society

The new regulations are expected to affect not only consumer behavior but also the beverage market as a whole. Manufacturers will have to adapt to new requirements, and retail chains will need to review their product assortments. For parents and teachers, this will become an additional tool to help monitor children’s health.

In recent years, Spain has already taken steps to restrict the sale of unhealthy products to minors. For example, previous measures included bans on the sale of alcohol and tobacco to those under 18, as well as restrictions on fast food advertising. Such initiatives are supported by the public and have become part of national policy to protect young people’s health.

Similar measures are also being discussed in other European countries. Some regions have already imposed restrictions on the sale of energy drinks to teenagers, and in certain cases — a complete ban. These decisions are often accompanied by information campaigns and educational programs aimed at fostering healthy habits among young people.
