Spain set for record as tourism surges amid global conflicts

How international conflicts affect tourism flows to Spain

Spain is emerging as a leading destination for tourists thanks to its safety. Ongoing military conflicts in other regions are boosting interest in the country. A new historical record in visitor numbers and revenue is expected.

In recent years, Spain has become a focal point for European tourism, thanks to its geographic distance from areas of military conflict. This factor has been key for millions of travelers seeking a safe holiday destination. Against the backdrop of instability in the Eastern Mediterranean and other regions, Spain enjoys a unique advantage that has a direct impact on its economy and labor market.

Experts note that this situation has been seen before. In the 1990s, when the Balkans were engulfed in war, Spain became an alternative for tourists who had previously favored other Mediterranean destinations. At that time, the country saw guest numbers surge by nearly fifty percent in a short period, despite economic difficulties in Europe. A similar trend appeared after the conflict in Ukraine began: tourists from Germany, the UK, France, and the Netherlands once again turned to Spain, allowing it to strengthen its position in the global market.

Record-breaking figures

According to russpain.com, by 2026 Spain could welcome over one hundred million tourists, with industry revenues approaching €150 billion. This growth is driven not only by the allure of its beaches and cultural landmarks, but also by the country’s stable internal situation. Tourism already contributes more than 12% of GDP and provides jobs for around three million people. Nearly 60% of these revenues come from visitors from Central and Northern European countries.

Another important factor is that alternative destinations such as Türkiye, Egypt, Greece, and Tunisia are increasingly considered risk zones due to their proximity to conflicts. This pushes tourists to look for safer options, making Spain an obvious choice. Even short-term shocks, such as terrorist attacks or economic crises, have not dampened interest in the country for long. In the long run, Spain continues to strengthen its position.

Safety as a competitive advantage

Stability and predictability are the main arguments in Spain’s favor for foreign tourists. Unlike its Mediterranean neighbors, the country remains outside the zone of direct military impact. This allows it not only to maintain but also to increase tourist flows, even when other markets lose their appeal. According to RUSSPAIN, the positive foreign trade balance from tourism exceeds 4% of GDP, while the current account surplus reaches 3%.

However, short-term fluctuations are still possible. After high-profile events in the Middle East or Eastern Europe, shares of tourism companies and hotel chains may plummet. Yet within a few months, the situation stabilizes and visitor numbers recover. This resilience demonstrates the sector’s ability to quickly adapt to new challenges.

Historical context

Looking back over past decades, it is clear that Spain has repeatedly benefited from its geographical position. During the wars in the Balkans and during the crisis in Ukraine, the country became a refuge for millions of Europeans seeking peace and safety. Even in times of global upheaval, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Spain managed to revive its tourism sector faster than many competitors.

In recent years, similar dynamics have been observed in other Southern European countries, but Spain has most often emerged as the main beneficiary. This is due not only to infrastructure and climate, but also to its reputation as a reliable destination. According to analysts, if the trend continues, the country will be able to maintain its market leadership for many years to come.

Global experience shows that countries far from armed conflicts often see a sudden rise in tourist arrivals. For example, after the start of the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Spain and Italy became the main destinations for Europeans. A similar situation occurred after events in Egypt and Turkey, when tourists shifted en masse to Spain and Portugal. These examples confirm that safety and stability remain key factors when choosing a country for holidays.
