A tragedy occurred in the British capital: a 35-year-old Spaniard, originally from Malaga, lost his life after being found in the waters of the Thames. The man was spotted by a passerby in the Greenwich area as evening was falling. Emergency services arrived quickly and managed to pull him out of the water while he was still alive. However, despite the efforts of the medical team, he could not be saved and died in hospital.
The man’s identity was revealed only a couple of days later. He was Gonzalo Fuentes, an artist who had lived and worked in London for several years. Before moving to the UK, he actively participated in exhibitions both in Spain and abroad. His works were displayed in Bilbao, Cologne, and in his hometown of Malaga. In London, he worked at the renowned cultural center Somerset House.
Fuentes’ family, upon learning what happened, urgently traveled to London. They are now dealing with the repatriation of his body. The victim’s father is a well-known trade union figure in Andalucía, which has added to the story’s prominence in Spanish media.
So far, British authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of the tragedy. Both an accident and other circumstances are being considered. Final conclusions will be made after the forensic examination. The Spanish consulate has already joined the process to assist the family during this difficult time.
The death of the young artist has resonated with his colleagues and friends, many of whom still cannot believe what happened. In the art communities of Málaga and London, he was known as a talented and energetic individual who was just starting to gain momentum in his career.
