The official launch of the government initiative to renew the teaching staff has begun in Cantabria. Spain’s Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has approved funding aimed at attracting young professionals to higher education. Under this program, the region’s university will receive a substantial sum to create new positions.
An agreement between the ministry, the regional government and the Universidad de Cantabria sets out the allocation of funds for 2025. The document outlines the implementation of a support program for young professors and researchers, called “María Goyri.” This initiative is being carried out in accordance with the provisions of the new university education system law adopted in March 2023.
Funding and conditions
As a result of a decision made at the University Policy Conference in October 2025, Cantabria will receive €1,131,000. These funds will be distributed through the regional Ministry of Education and directed toward covering the costs associated with implementing the program at the public university.
The funding will allow for the creation of 29 new positions for faculty members with a doctorate, who will be able to start working at Universidad de Cantabria. All funds are strictly earmarked: they are intended exclusively for paying the salaries of new staff and cannot be used for other purposes.
Long-term guarantees
The document also outlines a funding mechanism for the coming years. The Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities commits to allocating funds annually in line with decisions made by the Conference on University Policy. The amount of funding will depend on approved allocations and available budget resources.
Each new position requires signing a six-year employment contract. This is in accordance with current legislation governing the operation of public universities. The candidate selection process will take place in several stages, after which successful applicants will be able to start work.
Timeline and details
The program sets clear deadlines. All contracts related to the hiring of new faculty in 2025 must be finalized by October 31 at the latest. In certain cases, this deadline can be extended until the end of December if there are valid reasons for a delay.
The “María Goyri” program aims to renew university staff and create opportunities for the professional growth of young researchers. Authorities hope these new openings will improve the quality of education and strengthen research activity in the region.
