A debate has erupted in the Spanish parliament that could affect the future of the national football team. Socialist Party representative Patxi López put forward an initiative that may lead Spain to withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel qualifies for the tournament’s final stage.
López called on sports organizations to reconsider allowing Israeli athletes to participate in international competitions. His statement comes against the backdrop of ongoing debates about Israel’s role in global sports. At a press conference in the Congress, the deputy emphasized that the possibility of a World Cup boycott would be considered further if the situation remains unchanged.
At the same time, FIFA and UEFA statutes explicitly prohibit government interference in the activities of national football federations. This presents a difficult dilemma for Spanish authorities and sports officials, as any pressure from the government could result in sanctions from international organizations.
At the moment, the Spanish team is confidently leading its qualifying Group E, with six points from two matches. The Israeli team, meanwhile, is in third place in Group I, having earned nine points from five games. In the upcoming round, Spain will face Georgia, while Israel will play against Norway. Both matches are scheduled for October 11. Only the group winners will secure a direct spot at the World Cup, while the runners-up will compete in play-offs for a place in the final tournament.
The situation surrounding a possible boycott has already sparked broad discussion among fans and experts. Spain still has many important matches ahead, and it remains unclear how events will unfold. The decision on further participation in the tournament will depend on both political and sporting circumstances, as well as the position of international football organizations.
