A meeting took place on the grounds of the Viana Palace in Madrid, attended by the heads of Spain’s foreign affairs and economic departments, as well as senior representatives from the United States. The agenda focused on issues related to the development of trade relations between the two countries and the discussion of new areas of cooperation.
The negotiations were attended by Foreign Minister Manuel Albares and Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business Carlos Cuerpo. On the US side, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were present. Also joining the discussions was the Secretary for Economic Affairs and head of the G20 Office under the Spanish government, Manuel de la Rocha.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of extensive talks between US and Chinese delegations, also gathered in Madrid these days. The US side at these negotiations is led by Bessent, and the Chinese delegation by Vice Premier He Lifeng. The main topics of discussion are tariff policy, export restrictions, and the future of the popular platform TikTok. This is already the fourth round of dialogue between the two economic giants, with previous meetings having taken place in Geneva, London, and Stockholm. The talks are expected to continue until midweek.
Spanish ministers, in turn, focused on issues that directly impact the country’s economic interests. In particular, they discussed potential changes to trade agreements, investment projects, and prospects for expanding cooperation in new sectors. Special attention was given to matters related to global economic trends and their impact on Spain’s domestic market.
Experts note that such meetings are becoming increasingly significant amid growing competition among global powers. For Spain, maintaining an active dialogue with key partners is gaining strategic importance, especially in a changing international environment.
