Summer Traffic Accidents in Spain: Road Fatalities Decrease

Andalusia and Catalonia among leaders in accidents: 2025 statistics revealed

Spain has recorded a decline in road accident fatalities over the summer. New safety measures are in the spotlight. The causes of accidents and the role of different regions are analyzed. Stricter legislation is under discussion.

Between July 1 and August 31, 2025, there were 228 fatal road accidents recorded on Spanish roads. The number of fatalities decreased by 15 compared to the same period last year, representing a 6% reduction. Meanwhile, the total number of seriously injured reached 949.

Despite a 2.77% increase in traffic and surpassing 100 million trips over the two summer months, the statistics show a positive trend in reducing the number of casualties. On average, three people died on the country’s roads each day. In July and August, there were days with no recorded deaths from accidents.

The most tragic day was July 6, when 11 people died in accidents. One of the most serious incidents occurred in the municipality of Sisante (Cuenca), where five people were killed — an event not seen since 2014.

An analysis by road type shows that 55 people died on highways and motorways, while 173 lost their lives on single carriageway roads. In both cases, there was a decrease in fatalities compared to last year.

Particular attention is given to so-called vulnerable road users — motorcyclists, pedestrians, and cyclists. This year, fatalities among these groups fell by 16: 20 pedestrians, 9 cyclists, and 72 motorcyclists. This category accounts for nearly half of all victims.

Since the beginning of the year, 746 people have died on the country’s roads, 34 fewer than in the same period last year. The regions with the most fatalities are Andalusia (47 deaths), Castilla y León (32), and Catalonia (28).

The main cause of fatal accidents remains vehicles leaving the roadway, accounting for 43% of all cases. Head-on collisions follow, making up 23% of the total. In some incidents, victims were not wearing seat belts or helmets, which is also noted as a risk factor.

Motorcyclists continue to be one of the most vulnerable groups: on average, one person riding a two-wheeled vehicle died each day. The number of motorcycles in the country has reached 15% of the total vehicle fleet, and motorcyclists account for 27% of all fatalities.

During the summer, 100.5 million trips were recorded. In August, there were 52 million, while July saw 48.5 million trips. The highest traffic was on August 1, when two million vehicles were on the roads.

The Guardia Civil played an important role in maintaining order on the roads, especially during the wildfires in August. Officers managed traffic in restricted access areas, escorted convoys, and provided alternative routes. More than 5,000 personnel from different regions took part in these efforts.

Authorities emphasize the need for prompt adoption of a law to lower the permissible blood alcohol level to 0.2 grams per liter. According to last year’s data, nearly half of the drivers who died had alcohol or drugs in their system. The new measure is seen as a step towards improving safety and is supported by leading organizations in healthcare and road safety.
