Tax website glitch denies Valencia residents new deductions at campaign launch

Tax deduction issues in Valencia and other regions

At the start of the tax declaration campaign in Valencia, residents faced difficulties with the latest deductions. Spaniards were unable to access new benefits due to a technical error. Authorities promise a swift fix, but the issue has also affected other regions.

For residents of Valencia, the start of the 2025 tax campaign brought unexpected challenges: new regional deductions, recently approved, became unavailable due to a technical error on the Renta Web platform. This affected not only those hoping to claim benefits for music lessons, sports, or medical expenses, but also anyone keeping an eye on tax system changes. The issue gained particular significance, as it concerns real money for thousands of families and affects trust in the state’s digital services.

As noted by El Pais, the Valencia Ministry of Finance, led by Jose Antonio Rovira, explained that the federal Renta Web platform did not have time to implement the new parameters before the campaign started. As a result, residents of the region were unable to select the necessary options to apply the fresh deductions. According to ministry officials, similar problems occurred in other autonomous communities, such as Castilla-La Mancha, where new tax relief measures had also been approved.

Political reaction

The situation drew sharp criticism from the opposition. Representatives of PSPV accused the government of Juanfran Pérez Llorca of acting hastily: in their view, the authorities paid more attention to publicly announcing the new deductions and rebranding the administration than to actually preparing the digital services. The socialists recalled that these tax changes were presented as Llorca’s key initiative, yet now residents of the region cannot access them. They also cited recent failures in the GVA Salut mobile app as further evidence of unsuccessful digitalization.

In response to the criticism, Partido Popular spokesperson Nando Pastor stated that he was not aware of technical problems but assured that the glitch would be fixed within hours. He emphasized that once the error is resolved, about one million Valencia residents will be able to take advantage of the new tax benefits.

Technical details of the malfunction

According to El Pais, the tax authority has already notified users of the issue through dedicated messages in the software and in the official manual. Citizens are advised to postpone submitting their declarations for a few days until the necessary sections for the new and updated deductions appear. Once the technical issue is resolved, a separate ‘Other Deductions’ line will be enabled for new benefits, such as those for music lessons, while amounts for existing but modified benefits will be automatically recalculated.

Authorities stress that the situation is not unique to Valencia: similar difficulties have arisen in Castilla-La Mancha, where two new tax benefits were introduced and five existing ones modified. According to russpain.com, such failures at the start of the campaign could lead to delays in processing returns and growing dissatisfaction among taxpayers.

Context and consequences

Problems with the digital services of the Spanish tax authority are nothing new. In recent years, the introduction of new deductions and changes in legislation have often been accompanied by technical failures, drawing criticism from both citizens and politicians. For example, the country has previously debated issues with accurate tax calculation for certain groups, as well as delays in updating software. Other regions have faced similar situations, where new tax initiatives ran into technical limitations of the platform.

The quality of digital public services remains a pressing issue across Spain. Experience shows that even the most thoroughly planned reforms can encounter unexpected obstacles during implementation. In this context, it is worth recalling that debates over tax changes and their impact on regions have repeatedly been topics of national discussion—such as the Supreme Court’s ruling on property tax for parties in Barcelona which also stirred up broad debate and prompted new discussions about the fairness of the tax system.

In recent years, Spain has been actively adopting digital solutions in tax administration, yet the transition to new formats is often accompanied by technical challenges. In 2024, similar issues arose during the launch of an updated tax filing platform in Andalusia, where some users were unable to access regional deductions on time. Cases of delays in updating tax services after the introduction of new benefits were also reported in Catalonia and Madrid. These examples highlight that digitalization requires not only technical resources but also careful preparation when implementing changes, in order to avoid widespread inconvenience for citizens.
