Tenth Protest Held in Valencia Demanding Carlos Mason’s Resignation After DANA Tragedy

¿Por qué los habitantes de Valencia exigen un cambio de gobierno tras la catástrofe?

Valencia hosted its tenth mass protest, organized by more than 200 civil and trade union organizations. Participants once again called for the resignation of regional government head Carlos Mason over his actions following the devastating DANA flood that claimed 231 lives across Spain.

On Friday evening, hundreds gathered at Plaza de la Virgen in Valencia to voice their dissatisfaction with the regional authorities’ response to the devastating flood that occurred on October 29 last year. The protest was organized by more than 200 groups, including victims’ associations, emergency and recovery committees, as well as representatives from unions and civic initiatives.

The main demand of the demonstrators is the immediate resignation of Generalitat President Carlos Mason. Protesters argue that ten months after the tragedy, none of the key issues have been resolved: the families of the victims and tens of thousands affected have yet to receive either justice or compensation. In some districts hit hardest by the disaster, residents still face disruptions in social services and a lack of proper living conditions.

Organizers point out that the authorities are trying to create the appearance of normalization, even though many problems remain unresolved. Demonstrators fear that with the coming autumn and new heavy rains, the tragedy could be repeated if real preventative measures are not taken. In their view, the current regional leadership is failing to fulfill its responsibilities and is ignoring the interests of the public.

During the event, participants honored the memory of 231 victims with a moment of silence and laid flowers. Protesters emphasized that they do not intend to stop fighting for the rights of those affected and will seek justice for everyone in the disaster zone.

The rally coincided with the completion of restoration work on the court buildings in the city of Cattarrog, which were completely destroyed by the flood. A total of 1.85 million euros was allocated for repairs, and the courts are now ready to resume operations. One of the restored courts is currently investigating violations in the disaster response.

In addition, the day before, the government of the Valencian Community presented a draft of a new plan for disaster analysis and response. The document provides for the creation of a special commission to coordinate the authorities’ actions in emergency situations. However, opposition parties consider the plan excessive, noting that the existing protocols are sufficient and the main issue is the inefficiency of the regional leadership.

According to the draft, in cases of extreme risk, a new black alert level will be introduced above the existing red level. This is due to the fact that, because of climate change, such disasters are becoming more frequent.

Since the tragedy, Carlos Mason has limited his participation in public events, yet he still faces negative reactions from citizens at some of them. Protests in Valencia indicate that public dissatisfaction with the authorities remains strong, and calls for change are growing louder.
