The Perfect City for an Autumn Getaway: UNESCO Heritage and Game of Thrones Filming Location

A Hidden Gem of Spain Where Game of Thrones Was Filmed: The Perfect Autumn Getaway

Discover a unique destination in Extremadura. This city combines a rich historical legacy and served as a set for the iconic TV series. The ideal route for a short autumn trip.

While Spain’s popular tourist hotspots are brimming with crowds even in the off-season, there are still places where authentic charm and a rich past are perfectly preserved. One such spot lies in the heart of the Extremadura region. We’re talking about Trujillo in the province of Cáceres—a town where history echoes from every stone, and a stroll through its streets feels like a journey back in time.

At the heart of Trujillo is its main square, the Plaza Mayor, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Spain. This is far more than an administrative center—it’s an open-air architectural masterpiece. In the center stands a bronze rider: a monument to conquistador Francisco Pizarro, a native son. The square is surrounded by majestic palaces, built in the 15th and 16th centuries with wealth brought from the New World. The palaces of the Dukes of San Carlos and the Marquises de la Conquista, with their ornate coats of arms and elegant balconies, are enduring symbols of the power and riches once held by the region’s noble families.

Trujillo is inextricably linked to the Age of Discovery. The town gave the world not only the conqueror of the Inca Empire, but also Francisco de Orellana, the first European to navigate the entire length of the Amazon River. Their legacy can be felt everywhere—from street names to exhibitions in local museums such as the Casa-Museo Pizarro. This historical backdrop gives the town a unique, austere yet majestic character that sets it apart from many of Spain’s other ancient settlements.

Towering over all this splendor is an ancient fortress crowning the hill. Originally built during the era of Arab rule, it was rebuilt after the Reconquista. From its walls, breathtaking views open up over the municipality itself and the surrounding plains. In recent years, this citadel has gained new fame as a filming location for a famous TV saga, where it appeared as the impregnable castle of one of Westeros’s great houses. This fact attracts fans from around the world.

A stay in Trujillo can be combined with exploring other treasures of the region. Nearby lies Cáceres, whose old quarter is also protected by the World Heritage organization. A little further away are Mérida with its impressive Roman legacy, and Guadalupe with its famous monastery. Nature lovers should not miss Monfragüe National Park, renowned for its Mediterranean forests and population of birds of prey.

Gastronomic experiences will further enrich your visit. The local cuisine is based on top-quality produce. Be sure to try dishes made from Iberian pork—especially jamón—as well as traditional migas (a dish made from breadcrumbs) and caldereta (a hearty lamb stew). Meals are best accompanied by wines from the local Denomination of Origin, Ribera del Guadiana. For complete immersion in the atmosphere, consider staying at the local parador, housed in the former monastery of Santa Clara.
