A tragic incident shook guests and hotel staff in the popular tourist area of Costa Teguise on Lanzarote during the night leading into Friday. Two British nationals, who were on a balcony, suddenly fell to the ground when a metal balustrade gave way under their weight and collapsed. The drop was approximately six meters.
Emergency services received the call about the incident around 1:30 AM. Paramedics and police arrived promptly on the scene. One victim, a 56-year-old man, died before medics could reach him. The second, a 54-year-old tourist, sustained serious injuries and was urgently transported to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where he received necessary medical attention.
Preliminary reports indicate that both men were on vacation and were not affiliated with the hotel staff. At the time of the tragedy, they were likely enjoying the nighttime view of the complex. The reasons why the railing failed to support the load are still unknown. Specialists are conducting a technical examination of the balcony structure to determine if there were any operational or construction violations.
Guardia Civil officers have launched an investigation to determine whether there was negligence on the part of the hotel administration or contractors responsible for building maintenance. Lanzarote authorities emphasize that tourist safety is a top priority and have pledged to take action following the review.
Local residents and visitors to the island have expressed their condolences to the deceased’s family and hope for the swift recovery of the second victim. The incident has sparked significant reaction among tourists vacationing in the Canary Islands and has prompted discussions about safety standards in the region’s hotel industry.
