Tragedy struck in the heart of Barcelona on Thursday night when a young man died after falling into the water at the Port Vell docks, despite rescue efforts. The accident occurred near Maremagnum, an area known for its vibrant nightlife frequented by both locals and tourists. According to preliminary reports, the victim was a foreign national who ended up in the water by accident.
Witnesses immediately noticed the fall and called emergency services. Paramedics and rescue teams arrived promptly, but attempts to save the young man were unsuccessful. Doctors pronounced him dead at the scene, and police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The situation was made even more poignant by the fact that the tragedy happened just hours before the 116th Copa Nadal—the renowned and oldest open-water swimming race in Spain. That very morning, hundreds of swimmers gathered in the same area to take part in the traditional Christmas competition.
This year, 403 participants started the race, including 137 women. It was the third-largest Copa Nadal in history. The event has long been an integral part of Barcelona’s festive atmosphere, drawing not only athletes but large crowds of spectators.
Police are continuing the investigation to determine all the details of the incident. City officials have expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased and reminded everyone of the importance of exercising caution near water, especially at night. The Copa Nadal organizers also emphasized that the safety of participants and guests remains their top priority.
