A trial has begun in Madrid that has already drawn nationwide attention. At the center is former municipal representative and ex-PSOE member Leire Díez. The case gained publicity after a video surfaced online showing Díez meeting with a businessman under investigation in a fuel fraud case. During the meeting, she allegedly inquired about details concerning one of the heads of the Civil Guard’s operational unit, who oversees several high-profile investigations, including the so-called Koldo case and other major proceedings.
Immediately after the video was published, a complaint was filed in court by a civic organization. This became the starting point for a large-scale investigation that quickly drew in new participants. Not only representatives of various associations but also political parties and individuals who consider themselves affected by Díez’s actions joined the proceedings.
Testimony from key witnesses
During the hearings, prosecutors reported being approached by individuals connected to Díez, asking for compromising information about the leadership. One of them stated that he was even offered a position abroad in exchange for his cooperation. Another prosecutor recalled a meeting with Díez and a businessman, during which she introduced herself as an individual authorized by the party to clarify the circumstances around controversial police and prosecutor reports. As evidence, an audio recording was submitted, which the court has yet to review.
The Civil Guard commander also confirmed that he met with Díez in a café. According to him, she was seeking internal information about the agency, promising to help him obtain a high-ranking position in return.
More suspects and growing public outcry
Every day, new parties join the case. There are now eight accusers, including associations, political parties, and private individuals. The judge has accepted statements from a judge, a businessman, and others who consider themselves victims of Díez’s actions.
Of particular interest is whether Díez acted as a journalist in pursuit of information for publication or truly had connections within the party leadership and law enforcement agencies. She maintains that she acted solely as a journalist, but investigators are examining possible contacts with former party officials.
