La invasió dels bàrbars Opens in Valencia: A Film on Memory and Civic Engagement

Cinema Premiere: How La invasió dels bàrbars Brought Audiences and Creators Together

Valencia hosted the premiere of La invasió dels bàrbars. The film delves into historical memory and actively involves the public in its making. Discover why this project has sparked such a strong response.

Official screenings of La invasió dels bàrbars have started in Valencia’s cinemas, drawing interest not only from film enthusiasts but also from the wider public. A day before its theatrical release, a large pre-premiere event was held at the Lys theater, gathering around a thousand viewers. This occasion became more than just a premiere—it was a celebration for everyone who supports regional cinema and values films in the Valencian language.

The project came to life thanks to the efforts of local professionals and active community participation. Many at the pre-screening contributed to promoting the film through a crowdfunding campaign. This approach not only provided essential funding but also built a community of like-minded supporters who see historical memory as an important theme.

The screenplay and direction are by Vicent Monsonís, and the film is based on the play of the same name by playwright Chema Cardeña, which premiered in 2020 at Sala Russafa. The film was shot in Valencia, with organizations like À Punt, 3.cat, and RTVE involved in production. The cast includes well-known actors such as Olga Alamán, Jordi Cadellans, Jordi Ballester, Pepa Juan, Pep Munné, Pep Molina, Óscar Pastor, and Eriic Mira.

Historical context and community involvement

The film unfolds across two time periods: immediately after the end of the civil war, during a time of harsh repression in the country, and in the present day, as relatives of the victims fight for the right to reclaim the remains of their loved ones from anonymous graves. The themes of memory and the pursuit of justice play a central role in the film, making it especially relevant for contemporary Spain.

More than two hundred volunteers took part in some scenes, allowing the filmmakers to authentically recreate large-scale historical moments, such as the gathering of Nazi officials in the Ateneo Mercantil de València building. Local artistic groups also contributed to the project, including the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia, the Coral Divise choir, and the musical ensemble Agrupación Filarmónica Borrianenca.

Recognition and awards

La invasió dels bàrbars has already gained recognition at various film festivals. Among its accolades are the Audience Award at FICCAT (Festival Internacional de Cine en Catalán) and the Jury Prize at the Somos de Lleida festival. These achievements demonstrate that the film has resonated with both the public and the professional community.

Over a thousand people from across the country supported the project financially, which not only made it possible to complete the filming but also ensured wide distribution. Thanks to this approach, the film became more than just an artistic statement; it stands as an example of how society can influence cultural processes.
