Over the next five years, the transport systems of Valencia and Alicante are set for a major transformation. Regional authorities have announced plans to invest 840 million euros in developing and upgrading urban railway networks. The funds will go towards expanding the Metrovalencia and TRAM d’Alacant lines, as well as purchasing modern trains and renewing infrastructure.
According to the approved program, a significant part of the budget will be allocated to technical upgrades and improvements at stations. The authorities aim to focus on accessibility for all passenger groups, including those with reduced mobility. In addition, the plan includes completing repair works after the severe floods of recent years, improving the safety and reliability of transport.
By 2030, Metrovalencia is expected to carry up to 105 million passengers a year, a 15% increase compared to today. For TRAM d’Alacant, the target is even more ambitious—boosting ridership by a quarter to reach 25 million annually. To achieve these goals, plans include not only building new sections, but also acquiring additional rolling stock, which will shorten intervals between trains and increase passenger comfort.
Authorities emphasize that such large-scale investment is not only a step in advancing the transport infrastructure, but also a contribution to the region’s environment. The new trains will be more energy-efficient, and expanding the networks will help ease the burden on road traffic and reduce harmful emissions.
As a result of the program, residents and visitors of Valencia and Alicante will benefit from more convenient, faster, and safer public transportation. These changes are expected to improve quality of life and make the region even more appealing to tourists and investors.
