In the coming days, Spain is expecting a visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is already known that one of the key points on his agenda will be a visit to the Congress of Deputies in Madrid. There, the Ukrainian leader will be received by Francina Armengol, the Speaker of the lower house, and Pedro Rollán, the President of the Senate. The meeting will take place in the historic hall of the Palacio de las Cortes, a venue usually reserved for high-level foreign guests.
Zelensky’s trip to Spain was originally planned for the spring but was postponed due to his need to attend the Pope’s funeral at the Vatican. Now, after a visit to Paris—where Zelensky will discuss security issues and possible guarantees for Kyiv with Emmanuel Macron—he will head to Madrid.
While the full program of the visit remains under wraps, it is possible that the Ukrainian president will visit the National Museum Reina Sofía Art Center. The museum houses Picasso’s iconic painting ‘Guernica,’ a symbol of anti-war protest. During his previous visit to Spain, Zelensky had already drawn parallels between the tragedy of the Basque town and the current events in his homeland, comparing the Spanish Civil War to today’s situation in Ukraine.
The Spanish government plans to use this visit to reaffirm its support for Ukraine. Authorities emphasize that they will continue providing assistance to Kyiv and insist on the need to maintain pressure on Russia. Last October, Zelensky and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez already discussed further cooperation, including the supply of generators to help restore Ukraine’s energy infrastructure after the attacks.
During the upcoming meetings, the parties are likely to address issues of humanitarian and military aid, as well as prospects for achieving lasting peace. Spain has repeatedly declared its readiness to support Ukraine until a just resolution to the conflict is reached. New agreements are expected to be reached following the visit, further strengthening ties between the two countries.
