In La Jonquera (Girona province, Catalonia), police detained an 18-year-old man suspected of robbing a local resident. The incident occurred in the evening when the victim reported to police that an unknown individual had snatched a gold chain worth around 500 euros from his neck and fled the scene.
Local police patrols and Mossos d’Esquadra units were dispatched to search for the suspect. During the operation, a young man matching the victim’s description was spotted on a city street near the roundabout on the NII highway. When officers attempted to detain him, the suspect tried to escape but was quickly caught and apprehended.
During a search, officers found two gold chains around the detainee’s neck. Realizing the police intended to confiscate the items, the young man tried to swallow both chains, but law enforcement officers prevented this and seized the jewelry.
One of the chains was identified as the one stolen from the local resident. Police are checking the second chain to determine its origin and possible owners. The item belonging to the victim was returned to its owner.
The detainee, who has had prior run-ins with the law, was taken to the police station. He faces charges of robbery with violence. He will soon appear before the court in Figueres.
The Catalan police remind residents to stay alert and promptly report such incidents to improve the effectiveness of law enforcement and ensure safety on the city’s streets.
