With the start of summer holidays, many residents of Spain set out on road trips in their own cars to take a break and change their surroundings. This period sees a significant increase in road traffic, drawing the attention of both authorities and law enforcement agencies.
The General Directorate of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico) forecasts around 100 million journeys this summer, exceeding last year’s figures. However, these mass movements also lead to an increase in vacant homes, creating favorable conditions for criminals.
In response, the Spanish National Police, through its official TikTok account, has issued safety advice to citizens. They recommend not sharing details of upcoming trips on social media, asking trusted individuals to check your mailbox and the condition of your doors, and using automatic systems to turn lights on in your home. It is important to securely close all windows and doors, and if available, to activate your alarm system.
Additionally, police advise beachgoers to remain vigilant: do not leave mobile phones or wallets unattended to avoid theft.
Separately, the Elche police shared recommendations on protecting vehicles from theft via Instagram. The main tip is not to leave valuables visible inside the car. If you cannot take them with you, hide them in a discreet place. It is also advised not to leave items in the trunk or park in isolated areas. Before leaving, make sure all doors and windows are closed. If you notice any suspicious activity, the police urge you to call 092 immediately.
These measures can help reduce the risk of theft and allow you to enjoy a calmer and safer holiday.
