Every Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, thousands of people across Spain eagerly follow one of the country’s oldest lotteries, hoping for a stroke of luck. For some, it’s a chance to fulfill a cherished dream; for others, an opportunity to improve their financial situation; and for many, simply a thrilling pastime. However, in the most recent draw held on Monday, the top prizes went unclaimed.
Although no one managed to hit the jackpot in the special or first categories, fortune still favored two participants. Each won €57,164.39 by matching five numbers plus the additional number. The lucky tickets were purchased in the towns of Burriana (Castellón province) and Torrent (Valencia province). All eyes are now on the next draw, with a substantial €14.2 million up for grabs.
This time, the winning combination consisted of the following numbers: 10, 12, 14, 19, 30, and 44. The additional (Complementario) number was 08, and the Reintegro number was 04. In the accompanying Joker game, luck favored the sequence 9 770 207.
The history of this lottery dates back to the distant 18th century. The first draw took place on December 10, 1763, during the reign of Charles III. It was initiated by the Marquis de Esquilache, the finance minister, who sought to replenish the state treasury without introducing new taxes for the population. Over its long history, the lottery underwent changes and was even suspended for a time, but in 1985 it was revived in the format we know today and has since remained one of the key events in the world of Spanish lotteries.
The rules for participation are quite simple. Players must select six unique numbers from 1 to 49. In addition to the main combination, each ticket is automatically assigned a reimbursement number (from 0 to 9), and an additional number is also drawn. To win the highest, special prize category, you must guess not only the six main numbers but also the reimbursement number.
For those looking to try their luck in a big way, there is an extra option—the “Joker.” For just one euro, a random seven-digit number is assigned to the ticket. If it matches the winning “Joker” combination exactly, the ticket holder becomes a millionaire, winning a prize of 1 million euros.
