Madrid Ranked Among the World’s Top Five Cities by World’s Best Cities

Madrid surpasses Rome and Berlin. The Spanish capital joins the world's top 5

Madrid made an impressive leap, securing a spot in the world’s top five cities. The city outperformed many global capitals. Find out what fueled this achievement. Barcelona also made the list.

Global Recognition for the Spanish Capital

The capital of Spain has made a remarkable breakthrough, securing its place among the world’s top metropolises. According to a recent study, the city ranked fifth in the global list of the most attractive urban centers. This result puts it alongside giants like London, New York, Paris, and Tokyo, which claimed the top four spots. The Spanish capital left behind major competitors like Singapore and leading European cities.

This achievement is no fluke, but rather confirmation of a long-standing trend. In recent years, the city has consistently received high marks in various international reports. For example, it was recognized as the second most attractive urban destination for travelers and made the top ten for the quality of experiences it offers visitors. Additionally, it has been highlighted as one of the world’s leading hubs for hosting sporting events.

What is behind Madrid’s success?

The ranking is based on a study conducted by a reputable consulting company in collaboration with a market research firm. It draws on surveys of more than 20,000 people from 30 countries, as well as analysis of statistical data. Experts evaluated cities across three key areas: quality of life, hospitality, and conditions for prosperity. This comprehensive approach made it possible to identify the Spanish capital’s strongest qualities.

Analysts cite large-scale urban transformations currently underway in the metropolis as key factors for its success. The report highlights its growing ability to attract investment, talented professionals from around the globe, and an increasing flow of tourists. Particular attention is given to the city’s commitment to sustainable development and greening projects. The creation of the ‘Metropolitan Forest’—an ambitious plan to form the largest green belt in Europe stretching 75 kilometers and planting hundreds of thousands of new trees—is mentioned as a prime example. The Santander Park renovation project also received high praise.

Another landmark project that drew attention is ‘Madrid Nuevo Norte.’ This initiative, which is transforming more than 500 acres of former railway land, is described as the city’s boldest bet on the future. Cultural dynamism played a significant role as well: The opening of the Royal Collections Gallery and the revival of neighborhood cinemas like Cines Embajadores have further boosted the city’s profile.

Barcelona in the top ten and looking to the future

A representative from the mayor’s office responsible for tourism commented on the high ranking. She emphasized that this recognition is a reward for strategic vision and comprehensive urban transformation. According to her, such a position in the ranking reflects the appeal of the city’s quality tourism model and reinforces its status as a global trendsetter.

Another Spanish gem, Barcelona, also made it into the top ten, maintaining its tenth place. The report highlights that the Catalan capital remains extremely popular, but is now shaping its relationship with the world on its own terms. The city’s priorities have shifted toward the well-being of its residents and long-term economic sustainability. The main challenge for Barcelona continues to be managing the massive influx of visitors, which reaches 12 million people a year—twice the metropolitan population. One successful example of tackling this issue is the creation of pedestrian ‘superblocks’ that return public spaces to local residents.
