Spain and Algeria share a rich and rather complex history of relations. Algeria was a French colony until it gained independence in 1962. During its rule, France relocated many Algerians to Spain’s southern coast to use their labor force.
After Algeria achieved independence, Spain and France signed an agreement to repatriate Algerian immigrants to Algeria, and many returned. Since then, Spain and Algeria have maintained diplomatic and economic relations.
