Chinese Diesel Giant: 12.5 Liters, One-Ton Weight and Record-Breaking Efficiency

Breakthrough engine promises savings and eco-benefits — discover what it means for drivers

Weichai Power has unveiled a diesel engine weighing over a ton and consuming just 12.5 liters, setting a new global efficiency record. This technology promises to lower costs and emissions in heavy-duty transport.

The introduction of a new diesel engine with record-breaking efficiency could reshape the freight and heavy machinery sectors. Reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions are more than just technical achievements—they represent real savings for businesses and farmers. As fuel prices continue to rise and environmental regulations grow stricter, such innovations are becoming essential for the industry.

Weichai Power from China has unveiled a diesel engine weighing over 1,000 kg and with a displacement of 12.5 liters. This unit delivers 530 horsepower and 2,500 Nm of torque, making it suitable for the heaviest applications—from agricultural machinery to marine vessels. But most importantly, the engine’s thermal efficiency has reached 53.09%, setting an absolute record among diesel engines to date.

Technology and benefits

Achieving this result took nearly ten years. Since 2015, the company assembled a team of hundreds of specialists who gradually improved efficiency step by step. In 2020, they reached a level of 50.23%, then in 2022—51.09%, and by the end of that year—52.28%. The latest breakthrough to 53.09% occurred in April 2024 at an international congress in Tianjin.

For truck and tractor owners, this means not only saving on fuel but also reducing operating costs. According to Weichai Power estimates, replacing old engines with new ones can save up to 14% on diesel. For a single heavy tractor covering 250,000 km a year, that’s about 12,000 liters of fuel annually. At current diesel prices in Spain, the savings could exceed 18,000 euros a year.

Impact on the industry

The introduction of such engines could shift the balance of power in the transport and agricultural sectors. Cutting fuel consumption by millions of tons annually will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 100 million tons. This is especially significant for countries where trucking and agriculture make up a large part of the economy.

Weichai Power’s new technologies are suitable not only for trucks but also tractors, construction machinery, and ships. While electrification of heavy transport is not yet widespread, such diesel engines remain indispensable. As hybrid cars have already transformed the market—for example, the success of the Ebro S400 hybrid showed that innovation can quickly rewrite the rules of the game.

Outlook and challenges

Despite their record performance, Weichai Power engineers don’t plan to stop here. The company believes there is still room to improve efficiency. In the coming years, even more economical and powerful diesel units are expected, which will be in demand across a wide range of industries.

However, switching to new engines requires investment and time. Not all carriers and farmers are ready to immediately upgrade their fleets. Yet, with rising fuel prices and increasing pressure from environmental regulations, demand for such solutions will only continue to grow. Importantly, these developments support not only the economy but also ecology, reducing the overall harm from heavy transport.

Weichai Power is one of the largest engine manufacturers in China, specializing in the development and production of power units for trucks, agricultural machinery, and ships. The company is known for its innovations in improving diesel engine efficiency and reliability. In recent years, the brand has become a symbol of technological progress in heavy industry, with its solutions actively adopted worldwide.
